Tune in tomorrow, June 27, at 9:30 a.m. as Dr. Jessica Redfern, Associate Vice President of Ocean Conservation Science in the Anderson Cabot Center for Ocean Life at the New England Aquarium, testifies in opposition to a proposed bill that would have devastating consequences for the critically endangered North Atlantic right whales. The hearing will consider H.R. 8704, which would delay the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's (NOAA) ability to implement proposed protections for right whales from vessel strikes through December 31, 2030. Vessel strikes are a leading threat to the species, whose population currently stands at less than 360 individuals. Urgent action is needed now to reduce vessel strike risk to the North Atlantic right whale. It is critical to ensure right whales survive long enough for the approaches in H.R. 8704 to be developed, assessed, and carried out. Dr. Kathryn Tuxbury was invited to the Cape Cod Museum of Natural History for the International Horseshoe Crab Day celebration, where she spoke about her career journey from studying horseshoe crab populations to working as a Senior Veterinarian here at the Aquarium. Her talk, “My Lifelong Molt: Horseshoe Crabs and a Lifetime of Learning,” covered some of her various research projects, as well as highlights of her clinical work as an aquatic animal veterinarian. The effects of climate change are always top of mind at the Aquarium. The city's Green Ribbon Commission has been working with the Aquarium and other cultural institutions to design phased climate action plans that will reduce emissions in five-year increments. The goal: to get to net zero by 2050.
