Neuraxpharm advocates for better transition period of services in epilepsy. As many as 1 in 3 young people have said that their experience of moving from child to adult epilepsy services had a negative impact on their mental health. The transition from paediatric to adult healthcare should be a gradual process to give time for adolescents with epilepsy to prepare and discuss their concerns and needs as they develop and reach adulthood. This testimonial video, developed by Neuraxpharm in partnership with Young Epilepsy, shows different experiences from young people with epilepsy when they move to university education and the healthcare service that they received. It seems that more supportive programmes are needed to better understand the disease, the changes that can occur as people grow up and some recommendations to improve quality of life. #Epilepsy #Neuraxpharm #YoungEpilepsy #patients #transitionperiod #growingwithepilepsy

In general, people living with epilepsy have a risk of up to 1.2 in 1,000 of Sudden Unexpected Death in Epilepsy (SUDEP) per year. Among Australia’s estimated 142,740 people living with epilepsy, this would equate to approximately 171 SUDEP-related deaths per year across the general population with epilepsy. Among children, one in 4,500 are at risk of SUDEP. Most, but not all, cases of SUDEP occur during or immediately after a seizure. This is such an important article because it casts a much-needed light on the incredible work of behavioral health professionals like Mandy and her team, who are tackling OUD in both children and adults. But there is a much bigger problem we need to recognize that’s not making the headlines as much: the lack of specialized pediatric care, especially in addiction medicine. The efforts in Massachusetts are highlighted as a rare example of integrating addiction treatment into pediatric care. Despite recommendations from the American Academy of Pediatrics, very few pediatricians are equipped to offer buprenorphine, a key treatment for teens with OUD. There is simply insufficient access to specialized care for children facing addiction, which is a growing concern given the rise in pediatric overdose deaths. The article aptly points out that while some pediatricians feel unprepared due to a lack of training or resources, there’s an urgent need to broaden the scope of pediatric care to include addiction services. It won’t be easy, because this sort of sweeping change requires a shift in both medical education and healthcare policies not to mention reimbursement policies to ensure that all children have access to the care they need.
Another article with the same clear message: people need access to medication, an evidence-based tool to prevent overdose death. It’s also a compelling case for additional access to naloxone and fentanyl test strips. These are effective tools to reduce overdose death. If you’re in Erie County, PA you can walk into UPMC Western Behavioral Health at Safe Harbor and get test strips for drug checking and naloxone. No questions asked. We can also discuss medication options for substance use disorder at any time. We are happy to help you get linked to any number of resources in our community. Erie has so many wonderful organizations. We can impact this issue ❤️ so fewer families, friends, and neighbors experience this loss. https://lnkd.in/e-zC3SHR

PMDD & PME Specialist. Helping you get off the emotional rollercoaster and go from surviving to striving
Can you help improve PMDD Education for Health Professionals by signing this petition? Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder or PMDD is cyclical, hormone-based condition with symptoms arising during the premenstrual, or luteal phase of the menstrual cycle. It affects 5.5% of women/AFAB individuals of childbearing age. Some research suggest that this number is up to 8%. It is not your regular PMS. PMDD symptoms can be extremely debilitating. PMDD can cause severe emotional, professional, and personal harm to those who have it. Those with PMDD are at increased risk for suicide and suicidal behaviour. PMDD can feel like a "half-life". PMDD can feel like "one week of hell and three weeks of cleaning up". @IAPMD - International Association for PMDD & PME PMDD remains under-recognized and poorly understood within the medical community. What are the risks of no treatment or undertreatment of hypothyroidism in newborns and children? In newborns: 📌treatment of congenital hypothyroidism is essential to ensure proper development of the baby’s brain 📌screening of TSH levels should be made available everywhere 📌if treatment of congenital hypothyroidism is delayed, the baby’s brain development will be impaired. In children and adolescents, consequences of undertreatment or no treatment of hypothyroidism in children may be: 📌poor growth and development 📌behavioural problems 📌poor performance at school 📌symptoms of Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) These conditions may be reversible in children and adolescents if hypothyroidism is treated early and correctly with levothyroxine. "Under-treatment of the Non-Communicable Disease hypothyroidism requires more focus both within healthcare systems and from the global political systems to prevent health consequences," says Prof. Dr. Ulla Feldt-Rasmussen, Endocrinologist, University of Copenhagen, Denmark. Social stigma surrounding epilepsy can have devastating effects on patients. Discrimination and shame associated with the condition can impact patients economically, socially, and culturally. Enacted stigma and felt stigma are predictors of the expected discrimination and shameful feelings that stop people from seeking help or sharing their experiences with others. Felt stigma can even reduce the quality of life for patients with well-controlled seizures. It's important to reduce stigma and help patients feel supported. This is currently a major focus of activity for epilepsy support groups globally. Let's work towards improving society's attitude towards epilepsy and reducing the stigma surrounding it. On this note I join everyone around the globe to celebrate World Awareness Day on Epilepsy for 2024. Akinola S.O.

This lack of knowledge about epilepsy translates into social stigma and exclusion and leads to the discrimination of people with epilepsy across all levels of society. For example, at work, at school or in the community. Lack of knowledge can also contribute to challenges in access to treatment due to misdiagnosis, inappropriate treatment decisions, inadequate provision of care and insufficient support for people with epilepsy and those who care for them. In fact, due to the stigma surrounding epilepsy, in many parts of the world, those affected will not come forward to seek care. Additionally, lack of knowledge also hampers prioritisation of, and resource allocation, to epilepsy by our policy and decision-makers, and acknowledgment of the need for specific policies and programmes to address the burden of epilepsy. Epilepsy is a manageable disease with lots of medical and surgical treatment options available! #worldepilepayday #epilepsy #epilepsyawareness #epilepsyeducation #epilepsysurgery
