Josh Pepple, VP, Technology Planning for NRTC Smart Grid Solutions had a busy week as he gave three presentations at the recent 92nd Annual NC Electric Meter School and Grid Technology Conference in Myrtle Beach, SC. The Office of Professional Development at NC State University organized the five-day conference, which it describes as “a place where the metering discipline, skills, changes, products, and practices are learned and discussed.” The agenda followed seven focused tracks, ranging from metering basics to engineering ethics. Pepple’s presentations were titled “Monitoring and Managing Substation Equipment” and “Device Placement for Reliability” in the advanced substation concepts track, and “Planning for Maximizing the Value of Smart Grid Investments” in the emerging technologies track.

The Future of Smart Grids are SAS & FACTS The Smart Grid, with its cutting-edge technologies and intelligent solutions, is revolutionizing the power industry. This abstract explores the integration of two vital components, Substation Automation System (SAS) and Flexible AC Transmission System (FACTS), in the context of Smart Grid implementation. SAS enables remote monitoring and control of substations, enhancing grid reliability, while FACTS optimizes power flow, voltage stability, and grid flexibility. By synergistically combining these systems, the Smart Grid achieves improved efficiency, resilience, and sustainability, paving the way for a more reliable and future-ready power infrastructure.

The workshop focused on continuing the effort from the previous National Academy of Engineering Section 6 and NERC #workshop held in November 2022 and subsequent report, Creating the Sustainable National Electric Infrastructure While Maintaining the Reliability and Resiliency of the Grid. The workshop focused on two specific topics: 1. Capacity versus #Energy: Changes in the way to plan for resource and energy adequacy. 2. Transfer Capability: Changes in the way to plan for needed transmission. During the workshop, the electric #reliability criterion for grid planning and operation was reexamined. The importance of coordinated resource energy and capacity planning and transmission planning was discussed. Consensus was reached around the continuation of the 1 day-in-10-years Loss of Load Expectation metric along with the need for it to be enhanced with additional metrics to create a multi-metric approach. A final report detailing the various topics covered and the associated recommendations arising from the input given at the workshop will be published in June 2024.
