Less than 2% of the human genome comprises genes that code for proteins. The remaining 98% includes DNA segments that help direct the activity of those genes. These regulatory sequences can have a powerful impact on our health, but their activities and functions in the human brain and their role in mental health remain poorly understood. To learn more about where, how, and when genetic risk contributes to mental health conditions, NIH-funded researchers mapped gene-regulating networks in the human brain. 🧬 Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic autoimmune disorder that affects the central nervous system, including the brain, spinal cord, and optic nerves. This condition occurs when the immune system mistakenly attacks the protective covering of nerve fibres called the myelin sheath, causing nerve damage and a variety of symptoms. While genetics can play a role in the development of MS, it's important to note that genetics alone do not determine whether someone will develop the condition. Other factors, such as exposure to viruses or environmental triggers, may also contribute to its onset. 🌍 If you're curious about your genetic predisposition to autoimmune disorders like MS, check out our DNA Autoimmune kit! 🧪 Our blog post goes into more detail about the complex interplay between genetics and environmental factors in the development of MS. Stay informed and take control of your health! 💪Read more here:https://lnkd.in/gdjtv4cG #MultipleSclerosis #AutoimmuneDisorder #DNATesting #GeneticPredisposition #KnowYourHealth

Epigenetic trauma refers to the changes in gene expression that occur as a result of exposure to traumatic experiences. While our genes remain relatively stable throughout our lives, epigenetic changes can influence how genes are turned on or off without altering the DNA sequence itself. These changes can be triggered by various environmental factors, including stress, trauma, diet, and exposure to toxins. Epigenetic changes are a way for the body to adapt to its environment, and they play a role in regulating how genes are expressed. Trauma-related epigenetic changes can have an impact not only on the individuals who experience trauma but also potentially on their offspring. Though epigenetic testing, scientists are able to tell if you are a direct descendent of Holocaust survivors. The link between endometriosis and psychiatric conditions may lie with a common denominator - neurosteroid-mediated activation of the GABA-a receptor. E.g., https://lnkd.in/e5Y_B-Yk.
A new Yale-led study finds that women with #endometriosis are also genetically predisposed to #depression, #anxiety, and #eatingdisorders. In a review of data from more than 200,000 patients, YSM researchers showed the three mental health conditions were all significantly more common in women with endometriosis – even after controlling for co-morbidities and the effects of #chronicpain. The study also found a specific genetic variant linked to both endometriosis and depression. The results shed new light on lesser-known and far-reaching manifestations of endometriosis. https://fal.cn/3Apin
