NIA hopes to find a Climate and Health Scholar that will help to build the institute’s capacity in climate change and health. The program provides opportunities for scientists from outside the U.S. government, focused on climate change and health, to work with NIH staff on projects that increase climate and health knowledge and research capacity. Charlotte Mbuh from the Geneva Learning Foundation presented a scientific communication grounded in the insights from 4,700 health practitioners across 68 countries. 93% of them witnessed firsthand the devastating effects of climate change on their communities' health. From increased malnutrition and waterborne diseases to changes in vector-borne disease patterns, the report highlights the urgent need to invest in local health workers to build resilience against the climate crisis. Be aware of the scientific conduct! More so, be aware of your professional conduct! More and more lay persons publish/spread opinionated perspectives not substantiated or evident associated with con-artistic creation of the illusion of competence. “Misinformation has reached crisis proportions. It poses a risk to international peace (1), interferes with democratic decision making (2), endangers the well-being of the planet (3), and threatens public health (4, 5). Public support for policies to control the spread of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is being undercut by misinformation, leading to the World Health Organization’s “infodemic” declaration (6). Ultimately, misinformation undermines collective sense making and collective action. We cannot solve problems of public health, social inequity, or climate change without also addressing the growing problem of misinformation.”

Each year on Earth Day, we are reminded of the impact we have on our home, planet Earth. While we can influence the health of the planet by making eco-friendly and sustainable choices, researchers at Brigham and Women's Hospital are studying how the effects of climate change can influence human health. From respiratory diseases to mental health conditions to rheumatic conditions, they are using science to identify the greatest threats to human health and are strategizing new ways to help.
