I think the reviewer here misunderstands what the book is doing: "Countless works that don’t fit the bill — Hamlet, Lear, Much Ado — are skimmed over or ignored. Similarly Tosh writes loftily that “to consider [Shakespeare’s] queer life is in no way to erase the significance of his wife” Anne Hathaway, or his three children. But whenever they crop up they seem like awkward bollards impeding his linear progress. Gay relationships in Shakespeare’s plays suggest he was gay in real life: straight marriages in them “don’t follow a pattern from which we can infer an autobiographical portrait”." First it is not an encyclopedia of queer potentialities in the dramatic canon. But it is also not the case that these plays are free of queerness - Hamlet may have loved Ophelia, but he dies in a man's arms who calls him "sweet prince"; Lear's body is queerly experiencing 'hysterica passio' and two of his daughters don't confirm to gender expectations/ideals (a servant seems to expect to see a beard); and both Beatrice and Benedick spend quite a lot of the play queerly determined not to fall in with societal expectations of heterosexual coupling. Nor is it an attempt to argue a binary either/or biography - that would be anachronistic. Rather, it seems to me that the book points to the queerness that was inherent to the lives of many men, notwithstanding the fact that "the world must be peopled". Indeed, for me, the most important queer lives in the book are not those of Shakespeare himself, but Marlowe, King James VI/I and particularly Richard Barnfield - whose works are little known to the general reader. https://lnkd.in/edRFw6yQ

May is Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month! And this year, people are celebrating AAPI month through a lens of racial justice. The rise of anti-Asian hate that culminated with violence and chaos during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic lingers today, several years later. Advocates for diversity, equity, and inclusion have a responsibility to uplift and recognize the harm done to AAPI communities by the systems of power in this country. The AAPI communities present in the United States contribute to the cultural, historical, and economic success and longevity of our society. Today, and everyday, let’s celebrate Asian, Asian-American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander peoples! Do you think the stereotypical portrayal of different cultures in the movies affects how we perceive people of a certain origin? For instance, the portrayal of accents – some flicks still use them as comedic relief, unintentionally signaling that linguistic diversity is a punchline rather than a celebration. These missteps matter because they shape perceptions. They can create a distorted lens through which we view real people, fostering misunderstandings and reinforcing stereotypes that shouldn't be . I think it’s time for narratives that honor the complexity of cultures, showcase the variety of human behavior, and ditch the practices that create discrimination. Beyond Stereotypes: Reclaiming Our Indigenous Identity & Dismantling Colorism Mi gente, let's have some real talk about representation and identity. Growing up Latinx, many of us were fed media that reinforced harmful stereotypes. Take La India Maria, for example. These portrayals of Indigenous people as uneducated and impoverished are a clear reflection of colonization's long shadow. But here's the thing The question shouldn't be "Are you Indigenous?" In my case, I'm detribalized. My Mexican and Ecuadorian heritage carries the weight of a brutal history. Spain, our colonizer, meticulously integrated their racial hierarchy. Within Mexico, those with Indigenous roots were punished And when we fought for our independence, documents connecting people to their ancestry were destroyed. This is my family's story. We lost our ancestral connection due to these acts, but the truth remains We are Indigenous to the Americas. Colorism further isolates Indigenous people within our own communities. Lighter skin tones are often seen as more desirable, granting privileges our darker-skinned peers lack. Novela portrayals with light-skinned Latinas as heroines and Afro-Latinx characters in stereotypical roles are just one example of how this plays out. It's a system deeply rooted in white supremacy And dismantling it requires open conversation. So, mi gente, let's break free from these narratives. How can we reclaim our Indigenous identities, stolen by generations of oppression? How can we challenge colorism within our own culture? Everyone currently advocates inclusion, but very few make the effort to understand why and how other people’s attitudes and behaviors can be different. Only once we examine, acknowledge, and understand the basic paradigms (cultural , religious, ethical, …) from which those attitudes and behaviors flow, can we start to create a genuine inclusive environment.

“In China, the meaning of the drag house is a little different. It’s not so much a replacement family because most of us are close with our families,” says Woowu, China’s first international Drag Queen and former Queen of the Universe contestant. Another aspect of drag experience that communities across the globe have adopted is the drag ‘house’ – a group of queens who band together as a family. As a growing subculture and queer art form that fosters empowerment, safety and communal care for creatives and performers outside of the heteronormative sphere, drag has been a vehicle of both globalised cultural solidarity as well as practices of hyperlocal community-building. Farfetch’s Community Campaign on Instagram uses creatives from subculture communities in key markets to foster engagement and commit to a globally local ethos. Woowu herself is featured in the campaign’s China market content. “The campaign is a celebration of how culture-makers from around the world express their individuality through fashion,” - Oria Mackenzie, Global Brand Manager at Farfetch: “It was important to show audiences the diversity of Farfetch’s global community and how we speak to a broad range of customers, no matter their style preferences. 📚 Last night, I was winding down with my 6 yo by reading the book she picked before bed. Little did I know, our cozy reading session would turn into a thought-provoking discussion about diversity. As we stumbled upon the elephant section, I described the differences in their ears – round for Asian elephants and fan-shaped for African elephants. And her reaction caught me off guard. “This one is normal,” she declared loud and clear, quickly pointing at the Asian elephant. “This one is not normal,” she pointed at the African elephant and remarked. Her innocent comment got me thinking. Despite my continuous efforts to teach her about values of diversity and equality, it was evident how deeply ingrained our tendency is to categorise and label things based on our perception of ‘normal.’ It’s a reminder of the subtle biases that shape our worldview. So, I gently nudged her: “They’re both normal. Just like how you can squat (the so-called ‘Asian squat’) and Dad can’t.” That got her nodding in agreement. Although she seemed to have grasped concept that differences are normal for now, I know it’s an ongoing journey to combat our unconscious bias. But moments like these offer invaluable opportunities for growth and learning when we engage in meaningful korero to challenge those preconceptions we may have. #DiversityAndInclusion #ParentingJourney #UnconsciousBiasAwareness #MindfulMoments
