Today is the kickoff of the Rugby World Cup with the opening match in Paris. France v NZ All Blacks. Whether or not you follow the sport, take a moment to check out the level of talent that comes together for this event that only happens every 4 years. They are "Dream Teams" of the very best players from all over the world, playing in professional leagues (often competitors) that take time off to come play for their country. Perhaps we could learn from this approach in our own organizations. When you need a big win, forming and coaching a Dream Team is the way to do it. https://lnkd.in/dW2Pr5C3

Senior Account Manager Enterprise & Corporate for the Israel/US markets at Microsoft (Advertising) | Driving Sales Growth with AI.
This video captures a heartwarming moment of sportsmanship that transcends the scoreboard. It’s not about who won the game; it’s about the mutual respect and camaraderie shared between two players from opposing teams as they congratulate each other at the final whistle. This display of character is a powerful reminder of the parallels between sports and our corporate lives. We all strive for success, aiming for the next promotion or role, playing the game with dedication and striving to win. Yet, when the game ends, it’s the celebration of each other’s efforts that truly matters. Let’s carry this spirit into every aspect of our lives, recognizing that while competition drives us, it’s the shared journey and mutual respect that forge lasting bonds. #UnityInCompetition #CorporateLessonsFromSports #RespectOverRivalry

I'm not sure how "external" this external review is from Rugby Australia's announcement. I have no fundamental issue with any of the individuals proposed but wonder if they are too close to, and influenced by, the current set-up, personnel and environment. Undoubtedly, the recent Eddie Jones debacle and RWC23 performance, the removal of Dave Rennie, the lack of accountability of the leadership team (Executive and Board) and the continuing downward trend in playing numbers, all need to be analysed and addressed independently and objectively, dare I say it, by a group unaffected or influenced by the current RA diaspora. I believe rugby in Australia needs a purpose and vision beyond the confines and approach of the last, largely unsuccessful, 20 years. There are lessons to be learned from the strategies adopted in Ireland, New Zealand, South Africa, and potentially Argentina and Japan, in what needs to be done. I don't think the game in Australia is in a position that this can be achieved overnight and consequently may require a generational plan (20 years) to deal with the shortcomings and errors of the past. We simply cannot afford to focus on the next 2-4 years alone as that type of short-termism could risk the game continuing to wither on the vine However the next 2-4 years cannot be ignored completely and I would like to understand what RA currently believes a successful outcome looks like for the game in Australia after 2 years (post-Lions), 4 years (post RWC27) and importantly what accountability and responsibility the current Executive and Board have for delivering those outcomes? #rugbyaustralia #boardsofdirectors #advisoryboard #reidmatheson #sports

Rugby is renowned not just for the physical intensity it demands from its players but also for the strong sense of camaraderie, sportsmanship, and respect that it fosters. This unique blend makes it more than just a game; it's a testament to character and unity. Winning and losing are part of every sport, but rugby sets itself apart by how it treats these outcomes. Victories are celebrated with humility, and defeats are handled with dignity, often with both teams coming together to appreciate the effort and commitment shown on the field. This ethos is instilled from grassroots levels up to the international stage, embodying the principle that it's not just the result that matters but how you play the game and conduct yourself. Rugby's post-match traditions, such as the 'third half' or social gatherings between opposing teams, highlight this mutual respect and shared love for the game. These moments are where lifelong friendships are forged, stories are shared, and the true spirit of rugby shines through. These principles are lessons that extend beyond the rugby field, influencing how players and fans approach challenges in life. The emphasis on honour, effort, and respect reminds us of the values that can lead to personal growth and positive interactions with others, regardless of the context. #respect #respectforpeople #respectatwork #respectyourself

This is #class. Sam Whitelock was a lock for the #AllBlacks in the 2023 Rugby World Cup final, where the All Blacks lost to the Springboks by a single point: 12 - 11. He acknowledged the pain of losing but also took time to acknowledge the winning Springboks: "It does take time to process. It's something that will stick with our team - the one that got away. It doesn't take anything away from South Africa. They played exceptional rugby... they were playing winning rugby, and they got the job done. It's history now, we can't change it, it doesn't mean it doesn't hurt, but it is what it is." More importantly, he shared his encouraging views on the Sam Cane red card, which dropped the All Blacks to 14 men at the 29th minute mark: "Sam [Cane] didn't play the way he wanted to. You get around him. It's the human part of it. You take away the rugby, and you just worry about your mates. Some people need space, some people need support being close, some people you don't say anything. So it's working out what that person needs and do it. The team were awesome. Everyone stuck together. There was no blaming of people or anything like that. That is probably one of the proudest things about that time - we all stayed together; we didn't split and become divided." ----- This is what a team should look like. There will be wins and losses. But you stick together. You rally around someone when he hurts. You don't blame. You encourage and support. You be gracious to the winner. This is my work and life philosophy too. #Litigation is a team sport. #Life is a team sport. We must have #class. #rugbyforever #sundaymusings

The lessons from elite sport are infinitely relevant and applicable for leaders in the business environment. The key insights from this interview of rugby legend Victor Vito by my old mate Matt Buck: - You can only sustain high performance at a team level if you take care of your mind and body as individuals. - If the external circumstances aren’t providing the level of challenge needed to fuel growth, then change the circumstances. - Success in the workplace isn’t always the same as fulfilment in life.
Great to chat with double Rugby World Cup Champion - New Zealand Rugby, European Cup Champion - Stade Rochelais , Super Rugby Champion - Hurricanes and French Top 14 Player of the Year Victor Vito on New Zealand Media & Entertainment (NZME) Newstalk ZB All Sports Breakfast, Wellington on the eve of World Rugby Rugby World Cup France 2023.
