To my Northern Hemisphere folk! As the Earth's axis tilts us away from the sun, the dark hours start to ensue. The leaves, seeds and nuts fall from the deciduous trees. Birds migrate to warmer climbs and some animals hibernate. This is nature giving us a gentle reminder to slow down, let go and start to prepare ourselves for what's to come. So ask yourself these questions on a personal and professional level: What are you letting go of? Any toxicity or energy drainers? What is it that has drained you of energy that you can't afford to take into the next phase and indeed year? From the year gone by so far, what achievements are you remembering and celebrating? Invest 20 minutes a Day with Your Child talking about - why it’s important to plant trees.

Just a few days ago, these beautiful blooms weren't there.  I was getting a little worried. Had I made a mistake in potting my newly acquired Hibiscus?  While I'm no expert, I know enough to keep (many, not all) plants alive and keep them beautiful.  I used a good potting soil, the pot had drainage, I watered and put them in full sun - just like the instructions said to do.   I even talked to them and told them how beautiful there were and how happy I was to have them in my yard. (there's research on this, talking nice to your plants is good for them!) But no blooms. What happened?! I found myself nervously checking each day. Any blooms? What's happening? Did I do it right? Then it dawned on me. The bloom is out of my control.  I have done what was and is in my control.  I did my part. And doing my part will lead to a result.  Let go of all the nervousness and just allow.  A fews days went by, I resisted the temptation to check and casually, as I was eating lunch, what did I see out of the corner of my eye? You guessed it, big beautiful blooms! This is known as retrenchment whereby a proportion of the roots of the tree have been damaged (physically or by fungi or something else) the tree then tries to rebalance its root: shoot ratio which ideally should be in perfect balance. With the loss of rooting volume, the tree has shut down its main leaders/scaffold branches because there are insufficient roots to support the leaves that they carry. The tree then activates what are called epicormic buds which are normally dormant. It produces a volume of new leaves that the surviving roots can support. Once the process gets underway and the leaves are generating sufficient energy the tree will begin to produce new roots, increase the rooting volume so as to support more new growth in the canopy. And so, the tree survives and continues to grow, albeit as a smaller tree. Isn’t nature wonderful? I learned of this several years ago and am still in awe. Oaks (like this one on a TFB farm in Tipperary) are great at doing this.

Exploring the trails in a park, I stumbled upon this board underlying the importance Deadwood in a Living Forest. What caught my attention was the title of the board - “Deadwood-Living Forests”! There is more to deadwood- deadwood is not dead. When a tree falls, it sets off a chain of life. It creates some disturbance on the ground, allowing the nearby plants to germinate. As the wood decomposes, it gives back important nutrients to the soil, fostering the growth of new plants. Not only this, it also becomes home to a variety of forest animals and birds. Deadwood is much like life’s challenges. Much like the deadwood contributes to a living forest by providing shelter and helping plants grow, challenges contribute to our growth by making us stronger and more resilient. Let us embrace both the deadwood in nature and the challenges in our life as essential elements for growth and success. #learnings #challenges #nature

The best time to move trees in the yard is during their dormant season when they are not actively growing. This is typically in the winter or early spring (before leaves have emerged).   For deciduous trees, the best time to move is late winter, January through March. This is because the roots are less active, and the tree is not actively losing water through its leaves. The soil is also cooler, which helps to reduce transplant shock.   The best time to move for evergreen trees is in the early spring. This is because the roots are starting to become active, but the tree still needs to actively grow. If you are moving a huge tree, it may be necessary to move it in the winter, when the tree is dormant and the soil is frozen.   Here are some additional tips for transplanting trees: Choose a sunny spot with well-drained soil. Dig a hole that is at least twice as wide as the tree's root ball. Backfill the hole with soil mixed with Watters Premium Mulch. Water the tree well after transplanting. Mulch around the tree to help retain moisture and suppress weeds. With proper care, a tree that is transplanted at the right time of year will have a good chance of survival and thrive in its new location.
