Today, May 17, marks IDAHOBIT - International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia & Transphobia. It also marks the 6th anniversary of Real You - the LGBTQ+ Colleague Network at Anglo American and De Beers Group. Established in 2004, IDAHOBIT marks the anniversary of the declassification of homosexuality as a mental health disorder by the World Health Organization (WHO) in 1990. Despite that change, it is important to remember that across the globe, LGBTQ+ people continue to live their lives in fear because of who they are and who they love. In more than 70 countries, discriminatory laws criminalise private, consensual same-sex relationships, exposing millions of people to the risk of arrest, prosecution and imprisonment – and even, in at least five countries, the death penalty. Furthermore, 14 countries criminalise the gender identity and/or expression of transgender people, using so-called ‘cross-dressing’, impersonation’ and ‘disguise’ laws." Thanks to colleagues at Real You in Australia and South Africa who ran events to mark IDAHOBIT we raised awareness of LGBTQ+ stories, shared their lived experiences, terminology and how we can all be visible, verbal and effective allies. Allies, those that support the LGBTQ+ community, including, of course, those in the community, are critical to creating safe and inclusive workplaces and culture to help foster a diverse workforce. The United Nations through its global "Free and Equal" campaign for LGBTIQ+ rights is highlighting the role of allies through its #AlliesInAction theme. Allies choose what is right over what is easy. Whether it is calling out prejudice among your friends or family; celebrating diversity in school, at work or in your community; or showing up to protests to call on decision makers to enact equality in laws and policies. Your choices can change someone’s life. Show your allyship today and elevate the voices of LGBTQ+ people everywhere. https://www.unfe.org/ #realyou #brilliancehasmanyfacets #inclusion #idahobit #idahobit2024 #allyship #allies #lgbt #lgbtq+

'Eastern Europe and Pride: Analysis on Differing Attitudes to the LGBTQ+ Movement' Read the latest #gotstra report written by analyst Jiabin Zhang for the Europe Desk. 'Eastern Europe, with its diverse cultures, histories, and socio-political landscapes, has shown varied reactions to the global rise of Pride events and the wider LGBTQ+ rights movement. As Pride parades and related events seek to celebrate queer identities and promote equal rights, they inevitably intersect with a region's unique beliefs, values, and political ideologies. Understanding the region’s stance requires a brief look at the historical context. Under communist regimes, many Eastern European countries deemed homosexuality as a deviation, a capitalist perversion, or simply didn't acknowledge its existence. With the fall of the Iron Curtain, there was hope for more liberal views, but transition has been uneven across the region. Generally speaking, the countries and regions in Eastern Europe have had very different reactions to the Pride parades and related social events.' Folks, As we approach the end of the year, it's a good opportunity to take stock of what we've learned and how we can build on that in the year to come. This year, I discovered two new identities in being Autistic and being on the Asexuality Spectrum. In the course of learning more about my new peer groups, I have consumed a wealth of information about both the disabled/neurodivergent and LGBTQ+ communities. For anyone looking to become a stronger advocate and work more effectively to support and affirm their colleagues, I HIGHLY recommend reading The Savvy Ally by Jeannie Gainsburg. The book offers a straightforward and tailored summation of many aspects of how to best stand in solidarity with the LGBTQ+ community and work effectively to improve visibility, understanding, and support. The most salient message to me in the book was the assertion that ally is an active role, not an identity. There is no way to be a passive or silent ally. Allyship is about the work one does to demonstrate their support and solidarity and educate others on how to best support marginalized groups. I personally prefer the term advocate to ally, as it underscores and emphasizes this point. Advocacy definitionally implies active engagement and work. Effective allyship MUST be the same. We have too long accepted the notion that LGBTQ+ discussions are "too controversial" for professional settings, co-signed the notion that simply not being "part of the problem" is a viable stance, and failed to sufficiently push back against the false implication that LGBTQ+ identities in and of themselves are hypersexualized and perverse. We need to start openly, unashamedly, and unapologetically discussing, supporting, and normalizing the presence of LGBTQ+ people in our midst. An LGBTQer should have just as much freedom and leeway to discuss the gender and identity of their partner(s) as a straight cisgendered person. The existence of LGBTQ+ people and orientations should be discussed in age-appropriate ways equivalent to straight-cis counterparts in open settings with people of all ages. We should openly pronounce our support for LGBTQ+ identities and rights and actively work to demonstrate our commitment to them. There is no neutral stance here. Choosing silence on these issues endorses the social stigma that ostracizes, stifles, and attempts to erase LGBTQ+ people. We need to be more honest and earnest in combating that trend. If you're not speaking up, you're not showing up. Best wishes to all for the coming year! 🩷❤️🧡💛💚🩵💙💜🌈🏳️🌈🏳️⚧️ ✊🏿✊🏾✊🏽✊🏼✊🏻 #Solidarity #LGBTQInclusion #Pride #Allyship #DiversityMatters
