Engine-Makers Wrestle With Production, Durability Issues As Market Rebounds With yet another bruising year in the rearview mirror, commercial engine-makers are hoping for better things in 2024 as supply chain pressures slowly ease and production continues to catch up with surging demand from aircraft manufacturers. The coming year marks the start of a new era for GE Aerospace, which is expected to be spun off as a stand-alone entity from General Electric at the start of the second quarter. Underpinned by the steady success of its GEnx-1B on the Boeing 787 and ongoing sales of the Leap 1 through its CFM International joint venture with Safran, the engine-maker appears to be in a solid position as it enters this new phase. Air is drawn into the engine through an inlet and compressed by a series of rotating blades in the compressor section. This compressed air is then mixed with fuel and ignited in the combustion chamber, creating a high-pressure and high-temperature gas. The expansion of this gas through a series of turbine blades drives the compressor and other engine components, as well as generates the thrust. The power of a jet engine is typically measured in pounds or kilograms of thrust. The thrust produced by a jet engine depends on various factors, including the size and design of the engine, the amount of air being ingested, and the efficiency of the combustion process. Modern commercial jet engines can produce anywhere from 20,000 to 100,000 pounds of thrust, while military jet engines can generate even higher levels of thrust. The power of jet engines has revolutionized air travel by enabling faster and more efficient transportation. It has allowed for the development of supersonic and hypersonic aircraft, which can travel at speeds many times faster than the speed of sound. Jet engines have also been used in military applications, powering fighter jets and bombers with exceptional speed and maneuverability. Overall, the power of jet engines is a testament to human engineering and has transformed the way we travel and explore the skies. Here’s a recap of the other relevant news for civil aviation: 🔥 Rolls-Royce has announced the introduction of a series of performance upgrades on the #Trent widebody engine family. The modifications are expected to deliver improvements in fuel burn and durability. Hot and dusty environments proved to be particularly challenges – similarly to what experienced in the last years by other aeroengine manufacturers. Time on wing is expected to increase thanks to better coatings, higher-temperature materials and improved cooling technologies. 🔥 Safran has begun windtunnel testing of a one-fifth-scale open-fan engine. The campaign is ongoing at the ONERA - The French Aerospace Lab to support CFM International’s #RISE programme. Apparently, test results have come out a bit better than predictions. The thermal performance of high-pressure turbine blades and nozzles made from advanced materials including ceramic matrix composites have been already evaluated by GE Aerospace using a modified F110 military engine. Flight tests of a demonstrator engine are expected later this decade. 🔥 CFM International (CFM) seems not planning immediate upgrades of its #LEAP-series engines to respond to the introduction of Pratt & Whitney’s #GTF Advantage program, aimed at improving fuel burn and durability. P&W expects to deliver the new package in 2024, achieving a 1% fuel burn improvement over the current generation, alongside enhanced durability and high-altitude take-off performance. However, CFM seems not threatened and is focusing more on ramping up requirements of both Airbus and Boeing, in addition to addressing premature wear in hot and dusty conditions (see also the RR news). 🔥 Safran and Turbotech Aero are working on developing #hydrogen-powered turboprop engines for the general aviation market. Last month the companies ground-tested a H2-fuelled gas turbine in the context of the BeautHyFuel project. The tested engine is the TP-R90 regenerative turboprop. The campaign is meant to support Safran’s work in the RISE program.
