Doing great creative work is not about being fearless. Doing great creative work is about moving forward even when you are afraid. Many times people come to our marketing teams and say โyou guys are fearlessโ. Thatโs kind of flattering. Butโฆ only if they knew that we are always shitting our pants every time we are doing something unique and different. Whether itโs a plant based turtle soup for NotCo, sending customers to the direction of a competitor like in Whopper Detour, or painting an abandoned church in Europe with the story of Diablo, doing something different is like stepping into the unknown. And any uncharted territory brings uncertainty. And uncertainty brings a bit of fear. Itโs a natural defensive mechanism. So itโs really not about being fearless. Maybe if you are not a bit a afraid you are not pushing the boundaries of creativity far enough. Maybe we all should embrace a little bit more โbeing afraidโ. Whatโs Your Ad Campaignโs Meta-Narrative? Is the story of Rocky really about boxing? Or is it about an underdogโs epic journey back to self-respect? Great ads are like that too. The superficial story of an ad might be about a business decision. Or even a specific offer. But the real story will inevitably be about putting values into action in the face of resistance, required sacrifices, and battle-scars. And you can take that one step further. If all of your ads tell stories, and all of those stories are really about something other than the surface-level topic, then whatโs the grand โmeta-narrativeโ that youโre telling over the course of all those ads? Whatโs the overarching theme behind your branding campaign? Done right, the grand, meta-narrative of your campaign will center around: What kind of person you are, What kind of company youโve built, and Why youโre driven to do business in the way that you do. And on that list bit, Iโm talking about your โAdvocated Position.โ An advocated Position may not seem all that astounding when stated bluntly, but when brought to life through story, itโll draw high-value customers to you like college kids to free beer.
