Dr. Brian Slomovitz, Director of Gynecological Oncology at Mount Sinai Medical Center was the senior author of a clinical trial that was published by the New England Journal of Medicine last week. This achievement highlights groundbreaking research in the field of gynecologic oncology. Key takeaways include: 1. The prognosis for patients with recurrent cervical cancer is poor. Limited treatment options are available when disease progression occurs after first-line combination therapy. 2. In this trial, researchers evaluated the efficacy and safety of Tisotumab Vedotin, a tissue factor-specific antibody linked to monomethyl Auristatin E, as compared with chemotherapy, in patients with recurrent or metastatic cervical cancer. 3. The median overall survival was significantly longer in the Tisotumab Vedotin group than in the chemotherapy group (30% reduction in risk of death). The results for progression-free survival also favored Tisotumab Vedotin (33% reduction in risk of recurrence). 4. Among patients with recurrent or metastatic cervical cancer after previous systemic therapy, treatment with Tisotumab Vedotin resulted in significantly greater efficacy than chemotherapy. Yesterday, the Miami-Dade Board of County Commissioners unanimously passed an ordinance to expand the county’s local provider participation fund. During the board meeting, Gino Santorio, President and CEO of Mount Sinai Medical Center, spoke about how the vote could lead to positive developments in healthcare by offering opportunities to the indigent and uninsured and by allowing patients, especially those with cancer, to access essential resources and services. At our medical center, our mission is to provide high-quality healthcare to our diverse communities through charity care and financial responsibility. We thank the commissioners for acknowledging this goal and, with the passage of this ordinance, enabling Mount Sinai Medical Center and other hospitals to better support underserved communities in Miami-Dade County.
