Happy Monday!   Let's dive into last week's climatetech activity (03/06 - 07/06) - Check out i3connect.com for more details on our research at Cleantech Group.   Ecosystem Highlights & News:   The energy ministries of Romania and Moldova and Techcelerator.Co, have launched a new accelerator dedicated to South-Eastern Europe startups, SEE Cleantech Accelerator.   Shell Startup Engine UK announced 12 smart energy startups selected for the 2024 cohort. Huge congratulations to AEON Energy, Carbon Neutral Fuels, RheEnergise, Atmosfuture Limited, Bluemethane, Mormaír, VOLTQUANT, ZOEX Power and others.   Suma Capital announced the first close of SC Net Zero Ventures at €125M, with a fund target of €150M for startups developing critical decarbonisation technologies.   The MIT Energy Initiative (MITEI) awarded $150,000 grants to six early-stage energy projects through its Seed Fund Program, for solutions ranging from lithium-ion batteries, sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) to decarbonising chemical production.   Deals:   🌿 Agriculture & Food Prolific Machines, Inc. (US), a cell bio-manufacturing platform for cultivated meat, secured $55M in Series B funding for its commercialization plans. The round was led by Fonterra's Ki Tua Fund alongside participation from Breakthrough Energy Ventures, SOSV, Mayfield Fund and others.   ⚡ Energy & Power Solar energy startup Samara (ES) secured €9M in a Series A funding round co-led by Move Energy and Green Generation Fund. Participating investors included Ring Capital, Athletico Ventures, Seaya, and Pelion Green Future Fund.   ⚗ Materials & Chemicals Nova Carbon (FR), a startup recycling carbon fibre waste into high-quality carbon composites, raised €1.4M to transition from its laboratory to pre-industrial phase. Investors included AFI Ventures, Kima Ventures, UI Investissement and others.   🌍 Resources & Environmental Management Climate-risk analytics platform, Mitiga Solutions (ES) bagged an €8M extension to its Series A round led by Elaia, alongside Kibo Ventures, Creas and others. EcoRatings, an innovative cleantech startup, has successfully raised $1 million (INR 8.3 crore) in a pre-seed funding round. This investment comes from a diverse group of investors, including We Founder Circle, 888vc, VINNERS, Indigram Labs Foundation - TBI, Supported by DST, GoI, and Google, combining both equity and grants. Co-founder and CEO of EcoRatings, Aditi B., outlined the company’s plans for the new funding: “The funds will be used to acquire premium data sources, expand our token offerings, and introduce multi-modal capabilities.” Founded in 2023 by Aditi B., Aqeel Ahmed, and Shruti Anand, EcoRatings utilizes AI/ML and Big Data technologies to measure the environmental impact of products and services. Their methodology aligns with the United Nations’ 17 Sustainable Development Goals and ESG standards, addressing the increasing consumer demand for transparency in product sustainability. “Our Gen AI platform is a comprehensive solution for organizations aiming to meet their sustainability targets,” Balbir stated. “With this new investment, we are excited to further develop our large language model specifically tailored to the sustainability domain.” EcoRatings’ platform processes vast datasets to deliver accurate, real-time insights by analyzing relevant data from both internal and external sources. With over 50 paying clients, EcoRatings stands out with its domain-specific large language model for sustainability, similar to ChatGPT but focused on the sustainability sector. Cleantech startups in India are leading the charge in innovation, developing sustainable solutions without compromising economic growth. These startups are making significant strides in clean energy, organic waste management, and air and water purification, contributing to India’s clean energy goals. The focus is on Estonian startups within construction, energy and climate resilience sectors, and €100,000 per startup (no equity taken).   Brookfield Asset Management announced its $5B climate 'Catalytic Transition Fund' for emerging markets.   New Zealand Agricultural Greenhouse Gas Research Centre's 2024 Innovation Fund is now open, with $2M available for agriculture projects with methane and/or Nitrous Oxide emission reductions.   Breakthrough Energy is partnering with the European Commission and the European Investment Bank (EIB) to ramp up the deployment and commercialisation of low-carbon technologies. The partnership will mobilize €820M in financing support between 2023-2027 for demonstration and FOAK stage projects.   Google has partnered with NVEnergy for a new, first-of-its kind "Clean Transition Tariff" power procurement structure.   Deals:   🌿 Agriculture & Food Downforce Technologies (UK), a soil-carbon measurement startup, closed $4.2M in funding to gear up for international expansion. The round was led by Equator.   ⚡ Energy & Power Long-duration energy storage startup Highview Power (UK) has secured £300M to build the first liquid air storage plant in the UK. The funding round was led by UK Infrastructure Bank, with participation from Goldman Sachs, Centrica and Rio Tinto.   ⚗ Materials & Chemicals Echion Technologies (UK), developing niobium-based battery materials, raised £29M in Series B funding to execute its go-to-market strategy. The round was led by Volta Energy Technologies, with participation from CBMM, BGF, and Cambridge Enterprise Ventures.   🌍 Resources & Environmental Management XOCEAN (IR), an ocean data collection and mapping platform, bagged €30M in an oversubscribed Series B round led by VentureWave Capital, alongside Endeavor Catalyst and Enterprise Ireland. But while the continent’s startups and SMEs regularly make technological advances, finding the right markets for the resulting products and services can be a stumbling block. To make the clean energy transition happen faster, Bax & Company worked with Oost NL and 11 partners across Europe to design a Business Acceleration Programme for #batterystartups and SMEs; STEPSNWE! Across four years, the STEPSNWE programme supported a class of 49 promising energy storage companies with funding, an expert network and live testing environments in markets out of their reach. From garden-based heat batteries to mobile hydrogen generators, 19 battery innovations were tested for the first time in new markets through the Business Accelerator Programme. #Madrid-based Climate Tech Startup Clevergy Secures €1.5 Million in Funding. Iker Marcaide created and chaired Zubi, which led this round with additional #funding from Earth, a new climate-tech fund Maex Ament formed. Philip Stehlik, Finaves, Fredrik Wikstrom, and additional business angels in the climate-tech industry. Also joining as an advisor is Adrian Tuck, the founder of Uplight, a well-known #American energy #management software startup. Climate-tech company Clevergy closed its first pre-seed investment with Flash Ventures in 2022, raising €500k to create a platform that would allow energy dealers and #installers to #centralize home energy control. The business will stick to its brand because it understands how important it is for customers to associate energy #management with a particular brand. Clevergy provides a range of white-label #integration strategies that are customized to each business’s requirements. Finnish cleantech SpinDrive raises €3.8M to cut industrial energy waste & pollution with magnetic levitation bearings In a recent Series A funding round, Lappeenranta-based cleantech startup SpinDrive secured €3.8 million, led by U.S.-based investor Rhapsody Venture Partners, with participation from existing investors Innovestor and Zukunftsfonds Heilbronn (ZFHN) / Born2Grow (B2G). This investment will facilitate SpinDrive’s global expansion and the development of Active Magnetic Bearings, aiming to enhance industrial efficiency and reduce energy waste and pollution worldwide.
