When I was a junior executive and mother of three little ones, I realized I had to shift some things around. I made a promise to myself that I would live with no regrets. I never wanted to look back and say that I should have or could have done something differently. I realized early on in my career that no one at work would remember if I stayed late for a project, but my kids would remember if I missed something important to them. That no-regret policy became my North Star. Trust that your decisions are exactly the right ones for you at this moment. I’ve had a bit of a telling off! But it’s taught me a good lesson. A lady emailed me to say she sees me on the news talking about AI chatbots. She said I say how useful they can be for students and office workers but I never mention retired people. I’m not scared of trying new tech, she wrote, but I don’t know what to do with it. This really got to me. She’s absolutely right. She asked for some suggestions so I replied. I said really only she could answer that because it would be specific to her interests and lifestyle but I tried to offer a few examples. This morning she replied and she’s buzzing. She and her husband checked out chatGPT. It wrote him an essay about the Berlin Wall and it’s helping her plan a trip to Eastern Europe. They are very happy! Now they understand what it is, and they feel included. It takes a lot to email someone off the telly - but I’m glad she did. And it’s a lesson for even journalists like me who have been doing this a long time - don’t assume people just know how to dive in.

I am working on bringing a wellness programme to corporates to try solve for issues around wellbeing and burnout. Having been to a number of industry events recently, I have often left quite shocked and intrigued that everything has been so focused on Gen Z - even the 'experts' presenting had limited experience targeting audiences outside of this generation. So, whilst this gave me an opportunity to talk about 'what it used to be like back in the day' and go full on 'grumpy old man', this is good to see and gives me hope that brands will start thinking about audiences in a more 'behavioural' way vs. by age. #DontForgetGenX #AudienceInsight #brands #marketing #advertising #gowherethemoneyis #communications

Recently, tech social media blew up with a discussion of whether we need AI control systems (or whatever you want to call them*). Again. The sensationalist takes could be approximately summarized as: “We’d better do something urgently so AGI doesn’t outsmart us!” versus “AI is still pretty dumb, chill out.” I’d like to offer a perpendicular perspective in the linked blog post I wrote for you. (In which we both chill out and build something.) In short: "Nevermind AGI, GenAI, or anything AI. We're not smart enough to design, build, and steer complex technology responsibly and technology is getting more complex quickly. Let's build tools that make us more capable." Or, more bluntly: "Have you noticed that the people in charge are never the human-in-the-loop? There's a loop they need to be in... and they're not there." *For the semantics fan club, I put a glossary of 57 AI-control-related terms for you at the bottom of the blog post. If you're tempted to argue about word meanings, please enjoy those first. 57 of them should surely provide all the nuance you can guzzle in one go. And color-coded too! <3

Why is the combination of optimizing for collaboration and honoring individuality so rare that I dub it radical? All too often, our biases cause us to expect conformity without even realizing what we are doing. When we are at our worst, we seek to establish dominance or to bully others at work, rather than seeking to collaborate with them.
