The following are 𝟰 𝗵𝗲𝘂𝗿𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗰𝘀 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗕𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗙𝗹𝘆𝘃𝗯𝗷𝗲𝗿𝗴, Professor at the 𝗨𝗻𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝗢𝘅𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗱 and author of the wonderful book “𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗕𝗶𝗴 𝗧𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀 𝗚𝗲𝘁 𝗗𝗼𝗻𝗲”. You need someone who has seen it all, conquered mountains of concrete and steel, and emerged victorious. Someone with an almost magical intuition for construction, who anticipates challenges and navigates the ever-changing landscape with grace. Don’t settle for an apprentice when building your Taj Mahal! 𝟮. 𝗧𝗲𝗮𝗺 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗼𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗶𝘀 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴: Project success hinges on the people. It’s not just about individual skills, but synergy. Ed Catmull, animation genius, hits the nail on the head: a mediocre team can sink even the best idea, while a stellar team can elevate an average one. So, prioritize building a diverse, dedicated, and communicative team – your project’s secret weapon. 𝟯. “W𝗵𝘆?” – 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗡𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗵 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝗿 𝗼𝗳 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁: Every journey needs a destination. Asking “why?” keeps you focused on the ultimate goal, the reason you’re pouring concrete and hoisting steel. Think of it as your guiding light during stormy seas of deadlines and budget constraints. Andrew Wolstenholme, the mastermind behind Heathrow Terminal 5, aptly said, “Always ask if your actions move you closer to the desired outcome.” This “why?” keeps you grounded and your project on track. 𝟰. 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗴𝗹𝘆-𝗛𝗲𝗹𝗱 𝗕𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗲𝗳: The Future of Mass Timber Will be Human-Driven, Technology-Informed As a form of industrialized / offsite / prefabricated construction, mass timber fits squarely within a sector of the construction industry that is attempting to fix some of the challenges that have stalled progression for many years. Like it or not, an essential aspect of advancing offsite - and mass timber - construction is the integration of more technology. In this day of what seems like constant and polarizing viewpoints on whether AI is going to take over the world (and all of our jobs) or is going to bring about a great place to live, one thing is certain: 𝘵𝘦𝘤𝘩𝘯𝘰𝘭𝘰𝘨𝘺 𝘪𝘴 𝘢𝘯 𝘪𝘯𝘤𝘳𝘦𝘥𝘪𝘣𝘭𝘺 𝘱𝘰𝘸𝘦𝘳𝘧𝘶𝘭 𝘵𝘰𝘰𝘭 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵, 𝘸𝘩𝘦𝘯 𝘶𝘴𝘦𝘥 𝘴𝘮𝘢𝘳𝘵𝘭𝘺 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘤𝘰𝘳𝘳𝘦𝘤𝘵𝘭𝘺, 𝘤𝘢𝘯 𝘦𝘯𝘩𝘢𝘯𝘤𝘦 𝘩𝘰𝘸 𝘸𝘦 𝘥𝘦𝘴𝘪𝘨𝘯 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘴𝘵𝘳𝘶𝘤𝘵 𝘣𝘶𝘪𝘭𝘥𝘪𝘯𝘨𝘴 Here are 3 thoughts on how I view the advancement and convergence of technology and mass timber design: 1️⃣ As evident in the presentations at the IMTC this week, the use of technology is ever more becoming an important part of mass timber design. Not that it hasn't been used for many years - it has. 3D building models are not new, though still not the norm perhaps. But using it for more than just clash detection is where it can really shine. 2️⃣ Technology is very helpful in iterating through design options, grid scenarios, member sizing, floor to floors, and the resulting impacts on timber volume, fabrication modeling, install schedule and sequencing, and ultimately cost. Several presentations at the conference this week showcased custom-developed software tools - with Rhino and Grasshopper as the bones - which are able to iterate through hundreds of mass timber grids, predict sequencing and cost models, understand carbon metrics and create fabrication models with shop drawings. Meanwhile more software tools are being developed, tailored for mass timber's unique needs and capabilities, which will enhance the accessibility to those not in the software development space. 3️⃣ By itself, technology will not solve our problems. Even when talking through very complex models and doubly-curved timber structures, folks highlighted the importance of having master craftsmen test fit structures in the shop, provide feedback, and improve the designs. Ultimately this is why I feel that - as noted at the start of this post - mass timber's future will be informed by technology, but driven by the breadth of talented professionals who work on these projects. 𝟮 𝗲𝗻𝗱 𝗾𝘂𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘆𝗼𝘂 (𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗯𝗲𝗹𝗼𝘄 𝗽𝗹𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗲): ❓ How are you currently (or planning to) implement technology in your mass timber design or construction? ❓ Where do you see the future of technology, AI and parametric modeling in mass timber design and construction? #masstimber

When you know what you are doing

Productization The construction industry must look outside to other sectors to learn how to move product. Suppliers to the construction industry are caught in this terrible preidicament of seeking high volume and competing on low margins. To make things worse, suppliers are consulted on design too late or never. This is a problem because the construction sector needs the industrial knowledge of suppliers. Builders, even the most advanced off-site builders, are really quite clueless about manufacturing and product lifecycles. Somewhere in the off-site factory there is a sledge-hammer or a pile or panels where conduits where drilled in the wrong places. All the problems of trades onsite still exist off-site. So the biggest productivity improvement lay with the so-called “prefab” factory who are still way too slow to deliver affordable, high-precision, reusable construction elements. Architects are sold a fake promise: to be the master-minds of beautiful creations that give both beauty and meaning. The World Green Building Council has done a tremendous job in pushing standards and creating a marketplace for sustainable processes and products. However, the engineers are also fooled: peddling their high-prized skills for outdated practices. While managers are operators mistakr “smart” for gadgetry instead of focusing on communities and local resource stewardship. And the agency —who is supposed to protect the public interest— is drowning business in red tape instead of helping accelerating public-private innovation. No. This will not work. If we are going to adress productivity (speed) and sustainability (reuse) then we need to work together on a simple paradigm of productization. Think product that is made of standard parts into bespoke (custom) subassemblies that can be disassembled and reused. This is a simple two-step intervention where the supplier works closely with AEC/O to define and monitor product lifecycles. The builder benefits tremendously from such an approach: 80% faster assembly: disassembly or 4x faster turnover. This is a good thing when labor shortages is the most important issue. The AEC/O professional also benefits: focus on the product gives commercial opportunity and access to new growth markets. And not least: the agency can fulfill its promise of measurable impacts, security, safety and preserve our environment. Construction must look outside to productization. Offsite Modular – Prefabrication Construction No more chasing waterfalls. Jack of Diamonds – Right Competencies – Right Place – Right Contribution The deck of cards is intended to provide a considered view as to an alternative route to market, and maybe inspired some to look behind the published works into making it work in part for their own business. The attached Jack reflects on the continuation of Ace, King & Queen as to the beneficial role within the value chain engaging in project delivery of a proactive product, a lean manufacturing centric to remote supporting infrastructure.   The cost reductive initiatives and the alternative route to market was inspire by extraordinary conditions, first attempting to implement established technologies into a new market with a very different approach to how that should happen. The second was and appreciation of the first; and in doing so,  created a less cost and more effective entry for new OS manufacturers into the market sector while providing an independent route to product ownership and product delivery, improving quality, at reduced cost, and expanding market reach on a collaborative basis. The share consideration outlined in the Deck of Cards is to share such knowledge as not everyone can have the opportunity to be exposed to such conditions to initiate change or a couple of decades to worked through solutions and prepare the resources to support the implementation. It is understood by the author that posting a pretty picture of a rendering of a house with a cost breakdown demonstrating up to double digit savings on cost per Sqm or list the cost of assets for those wishing to enter the OS modular space would get more attention, but that is not the objective. The objective is to provide a platform of integration for those in the OS market wishing to extend their market reach, reduce cost, and provide advance solutions in build technologies. 1st July 2024 a new website will be launched with a purpose of demonstrating the deck of cards is not simply a structured methodology but have the resources to support regional –to globalization, with an invitation to invite global contributors in the industry. Two and a half years ago, I got a phone call that set my career in a different direction. “We need a design system for industrial building structures, so that we can outcompete our competitors. We don’t know yet what it would need to be. Can you figure it out and build it?” After thinking about how to respond, I assembled a development team and asked many colleagues what they would like to have automated. We came up with the idea to build a parametric design system for industrial buildings. When I pitched my plan to build a conceptual design tool for full building design, I was told by some not to pursue this! Now, two and a half years later, the design system we built is being used globally. Our structural work at Arcadis lies mostly in early-stage design. Much of our work lies in the development of industrial assets. There is an enormous surge in demand. These buildings are getting bigger and seem to need to be delivered ASAP, if not yesterday... To address this demand, our advisory work was traditionally done by our senior consultants, who use their years of experience to guide the engineers and deliver high quality outcomes. This practice is not sustainable when we need to hyperscale our output. We had to come up with a radical solution: to start letting go of old habits and supplement the way we design using automation. The idea to fill this gap in the software landscape had existed for a while, but we never knew how to address the issue well. That is, until we asked our consultants. They told me they wanted to simply generate designs for whole assets, and parts of assets, to analyze, compare and report design outcomes. They wanted to do more for the environment and know which design options are cost effective. And they wanted to connect with other tools and software, so the generated designs are not boxed in. I’m glad that I was offered the chance and trust to build the system we ended up creating. We’ve called it the ‘Building Structural Design tool’. An experienced structural engineer can use this to create building designs in minutes, rather than days. And it doesn’t compromise on quality. Everything we calculate is output in comprehensive printout reports. Best of all, our users keep finding creative new ways to use the tool to their advantage, some well outside of the intended scope. In the video below, we design a steel frame with two internal column positions in x-direction. Using the Building Structural Design tool, we investigate that structure. After that we automatically generate other design options to find a solution with three internal column positions that reduces the total steel mass by about 30%! I'm incredibly proud to have been part of the development team for this amazing initiative. It's truly remarkable to see the journey we've taken from building everything from the ground up a couple of years ago to the advanced tool we have today. It wasn't easy, but with a well-conceived idea, excellent leadership (Michael van Telgen), and a committed team, we've achieved remarkable things. For me, it has been a challenging yet rewarding experience to blend my background in design and structural analysis with programming skills. This unique combination has allowed me to explore new horizons, step out of my comfort zone, and even live far away from home. This journey underscores the vital importance of digitalization and innovation in the AEC industry.
