Pegatron to set up #manufacturing site in #Malaysia Contract electronics maker Pegatron has announced plans to build a plant in Malaysia, bringing the total number of its manufacturing sites in Southeast Asia to four. Pegatron regards its proposed Malaysian site as a long-term investment. The exact site and timeline for mass manufacturing have yet to be determined. Non-Chinese offshore manufacture accounted for 10-15% of Pegatron's revenue at the end of 2023. The proportion will continue to grow in 2024, according to the #Taiwan-based company. Good news - JASM officially announced their 2nd fab in Kumamoto. TSMC, Sony Semiconductor Solutions, DENSO and Toyota Motor Corporation announced further investment into Japan Advanced Semiconductor Manufacturing, Inc. (“JASM”), TSMC’s majority-owned manufacturing subsidiary in Kumamoto Prefecture, Japan, to build a second fab, which is scheduled to begin operation by the end of the 2027 calendar year. Together with JASM’s first fab, which is scheduled to begin operation in 2024, the overall investment in JASM will exceed US$20 billion with strong support from the Japanese government. TSMC announces expansion of investment in Japan, and Kumamoto’s second wafer fab will begin operations at the end of 2027 TSMC is expanding its investment in the Kumamoto factory in Japan by building a second wafer fab, which is expected to be operational by the end of 2027. This expansion will increase the total monthly production capacity to exceed 100,000 12-inch wafers and create over 3,400 high-tech professional job opportunities. The first wafer fab is set to start production in 2024 with the total investment exceeding US$20 billion, and the second fab is expected to optimize the overall cost structure and supply chain efficiency. I visited Sdr Chow Kon Yeow, Chief Minister of Penang, at his office in Komtar to have a chat about the New Industrial Master Plan 2030 (NIMP 2030). Specifically, we discussed the future of the semiconductor industry, of which, Penang has a cluster of about 70% multinational and 30% local semiconductor firms. Malaysia plays an important part in the global electronics supply chain, with 7% of global semiconductor trade flowing through the nation and approximately 13% of global chip assembly, testing and packaging being done in the country. Export of semiconductors such as semiconductor devices and electronic integrated circuits making up 65% of Malaysia’s total electrical and electronics (E&E) exports. This has helped position Malaysia as the 12th largest exporter of E&E products and the 6th largest exporter of semiconductors in the world. Penang in particular has more than 50 years of electronics manufacturing excellence. In fact, Intel’s first-ever overseas venture was in Penang way back in 1972. The state’s future lies in deepening the semiconductor value chain and strengthening its related sectors such as precision engineering and medical devices. Chief Minister Chow sees the future very clearly and would like to get more done to tap into the once-in-a-generation shift of manufacturing investment away from China into Southeast Asia. And this is exactly in line with the vision set out in the NIMP 2030.
