Just finished reading an insightful article on ADWEEK discussing the critical intersection of marketing to marginalized communities and systemic racism. It's a powerful reminder of the responsibility we have as marketers to ensure our campaigns are inclusive, respectful, and representative of all individuals. This topic is more important than ever, especially in light of ongoing conversations about diversity, equity, and inclusion in our society. As marketers, we have to stay true to these principles by actively listening to underserved voices, amplifying their stories, and collaborating with diverse creators and influencers. We can do this by: 1️⃣ Conducting thorough research to understand the unique needs and experiences of different communities, ensuring messaging is authentic and relevant. 2️⃣ Prioritizing inclusion and taking meaningful action to combat systemic racism. 🏳️🌈 Coming out - people often think that you only ever come out once, when in fact it is often a life-long recurring process. Each new work or social situation can present awkward moments, when in a split-second you must decide whether you wish to reveal your identity, ignore it or worse choose to tell a white lie. Imagine you’re a gay married man – how would you react if, as a new starter at work, a colleague innocently asks about “your wife”? Or you’re checking into a hotel and the reception staff member whilst looking at you and your husband says, “Apologies, we have you down for a double room, but I’ll ask housekeeping to make it up as a twin.” Nowadays I confess to taking slight pleasure in correcting someone, so I’d probably reply, “Oh you mean my husband?” and “We are married, so a double is just fine, thanks”. It’s never my intention to make people feel bad, just with a smile on my face to make others think a little first before speaking. Using neutral language with those we don’t know is important to avoid making the recipient have to decide how they react. In years gone by, I may have hidden the truth but once you do that, you’re not able to be your authentic self which can be detrimental to performance or relationships. This week I went along to my first #themarketingmeetup where Outvertising shared insight into what drives LGBTQIA+ attitudes, preferences, and expectations when it comes to brands from its 2023 The Consumer Report. One of the key insights from a comms perspective was that the LGBTQIA+ community trust broadsheets more than tabloids. Added to this, they’re more likely to trust radio channels and television to say the truth compared to their non-LGBTQIA+ counterparts – clearly demonstrating the importance of these channels for effectively reaching the LGBTQIA+ audience. In a time when the LGBTQIA+ community is facing increasing discrimination, according to the Outvertising report nearly 40% of Gen Z, Millennials and Gen X say that they have personally experienced discrimination, businesses and brands can play a key role in fostering inclusivity. But with Pride month kicking off next week, this year – so far – has been a little quieter for Pride campaigns. Have you seen any engaging and authentic Pride campaigns this year?
