Helping communities achieve success in economic, workforce and community development. Aiding communities in disaster recovery.
A white Christmas was in short supply this year. The National Weather Service reports less than 18% of the continental US had snow on Christmas Day. Thats a signicant departure from the last twenty year average of nearly 40%. Aside from a blizzard line in the upper plains states and some snow in the Rockies and New England there was no snow to be found. It was the same for large areas of west and central Canada. Not only was there no snow, but a number of places Including Chicago and Minneapolis had record Christmas day highs. Climatologists say the strong El Niño along with climate change have created warmer temps in the upper Midwest, central Canada and Nee England, leading precipitation to come as rain. Also the “brown ground” absorbs more heat from the sun, which also warms the air above it, melting what snow does fall.
