(taps mic...is this thing on)
Hello friends, former colleagues and extended network. It's tough out there. The market is saturated with talent and everyone is looking for a unicorn.
While those searches continue, there is likely work that needs to be done now, or like yesterday. If you or anyone you know is in need of a proven consumer brand marketer with deep expertise in integrated planning, campaign development, paid media strategy, agency management, or cross functional team leadership, let's chat.
I just wrapped up a short term consultant project with Microsoft, and I am currently looking for new contract, or short term project engagements. Most of you know me from my client-side work on top brands including Xbox, Nordstrom and Nintendo.
Let's see if the power of this platform proves itself to be true.
I know you would have a tremendous impact on what we try and do at L'Experience Paris. Maybe worth a drink to discuss what it could mean? Croissants are not software... so our means are much more limited. you are at the top percentile of people I have met at MS!
DM me if it is worth your time.
Here’s one skill that only top 1% advertisers have that can make or break their career 😬
✨Identifying patterns and trends. ✨
One thing I’ve personally learned and still learning is to be able to look at the bigger picture and figure out what’s working/not working and the ‘why’ behind it
Having access to multiple accounts and businesses puts us at an advantage where we can understand patterns across the board
This is why clients prefer agencies who are smart and can identify patterns and trends that’s happening in the industry and implement fast.
Ability to identify patterns helps you with the following -
✅ Implement something that’s not being tested by others (when others zig, you zag)
✅ Figure out the bottlenecks in the funnel easily based on experience
✅ Find common themes that help implement strategies that will unlock scale
If I were to ever hire for any media buyer/creative strategist position, this is the #1 skill I would look for in a person
You can teach technical skills to a person but the ability to identify patterns can’t be taught easily. It just comes natural to them!
What others skills have you observed work well while hiring for roles?

A bit of a long post, forgive the soapbox, but it does have a point.
----
I was laid off from Game Informer at the end of 2019 while working Gamescom in Germany. It was a pretty odd day, all things considered. I was the only affected GI person at the event when GameStop executed the layoffs. I went from being a journalist covering the news to inadvertently being the on-site representative of one of the biggest pieces of news that day. Devs, PR & marketing folks kept stopping to offer their condolences as I shuffled from one interview to another, a little numb, wondering what I would do once I got home.
The night following the layoffs, me and the other two editors at the show went out to a bar to meet Brian and Jeremy Gumber and get away from the drama of the day. What could have been a very bad night for me was made much better by Brian, who proved to be a bright source of joy and humor as we all stood inside a nice cozy bar somewhere in Cologne swapping stories and talking video games. The hazy, bad vibes of the day just drifted away. Brian is just incredible when it comes to lifting the mood, and both he and Jeremy both helped make what should be a dim, painful memory ultimately much brighter.
After I transitioned to PR and comms, I was fortunate enough to work under a number of talented experts and great teachers. Tara Bruno, my incredibly talented boss, was one of them but I was also lucky enough to find that one of my first clients through the agency was Private Division. I was working with Brian and Jeremy less than two months after that strange day in Cologne and continued to do so for around two years until I went to work at EA.
The thing that struck me about Brian during this time is that he’s a great leader that leads by example, and that example is a deft balance of tactical acumen and kindness. A highly efficient team is often one where all the members are united not just by their passion for the work but also by genuinely caring for and looking out for one another. Even though I was an external partner, I also always felt empowered by Brian as he was vocal about wanting to hear everyone’s perspectives. He helped me get over my initial timidity when it comes to sharing my views thanks to his earnest encouragement. I imagine many people who have worked with him feel the same and have similar stories.
Brian Roundy is not only a consummate professional but also a genuinely good person who cares for people and looks out for them. We need more leaders like Brian in the industry right now – especially right now. So hire him!
After 12.5 years with Take-Two Interactive, the last seven at Private Division following my start at 2K, I was laid off at the end of April as part of cost reductions at T2. I absolutely loved my time there, and Private Division especially will always hold a special place in my heart thanks to the team I was lucky enough to work alongside and the awesome games we got to work on.
I’m so proud of the work we did at Private Division; building something from the ground up was an incredible experience. I’ll be forever grateful that Tom Bass brought me over to PD in its infancy and gave me the opportunity to help build the most talented, incredible team I’ve ever been a part of. Being entrusted to lead the global marketing campaign for The Outer Worlds was easily the most rewarding project of my career, and I feel so lucky to have worked with so many amazing people and teams on that launch, from my wonderful PD and T2 colleagues to the incredible team at Obsidian and all the fantastic external partners who supported us. That game and its campaign will always be special to me.
As for what’s next, I was on paternity leave that was going to wrap up in early June, so I’m still enjoying plenty of time with our daughter for the next month, but I am already looking for what’s next. I would love to stay in games, but I am also open to exploring comms and marketing roles in other industries that I’m passionate about. I’m looking for fully remote or hybrid opportunities in the NYC area, so if anyone has any leads, please let me know! And if anyone wants to catch up and chat, I’d love to reconnect!

I really miss consulting and advising for small businesses in Web 3 to save them $ on hiring, marketing, team management and cross team collaboration 💥
If you're one of these businesses, I would love to see what you're up to and see where we can save you some budget by:
- not hiring a CMO asap
- developing processes that scale
- having a clearer vision & plan
- creating sustainable user experiences
It's something I used to do a lot of and then everything else got in the way!
Tag someone who could benefit from this 💜☺️
When you work with me, you'll notice I ask a lot of questions. I'm the person who, when we talk about producing a new brochure asks: "Is it really the best way to reach our target audience?"
As a brand strategist, I challenge assumptions, ask questions, and find opportunities for new ways to tell a consistent brand story. Because I always do my research first.

I'm looking for my next opportunity and project so if you can help me in any way, I appreciate the support.
Here' some way you can help:

😎 Point me to the roles related to Brand Strategy /Marketing/ Digital Marketing
😎 Suggest people and companies for me to talk to
When I was looking for my latest role, I was looking for something different.
I’ve worked on the agency side of the table and I’ve worked on the brand side.
I knew I wanted to work in big tech again but I wanted to find a way to lean in to my consulting skills while having the stability of a full time corporate role.
I didn’t think that combination existed.
As a strategy consultant, I get to work with Fortune 500 CMOs and leaders to help them refine their martech stack and campaigns. 💥
It allows me to lean in to my strategic value and work on different accounts while helping people solve problems. Yes, it’s as awesome as it sounds.
I didn’t get lucky, I got focused. I knew what I didn’t want and what was right for me at this point in my career.
So, as you search for your next marketing role (or any role), don’t limit yourself to the familiar boxes of agency versus corporate or particular industries etc.
There are unique roles that fit your skills, you just have to do the research and find that fit.
If you want to know more, share your questions in the comments.

Decisions, Decisions, Decisions...
TLDR; Some decisions cannot be undone. Some can. Know the difference.
#Marketing decisions fall into two categories: strategic and tactical.
Strategic decisions (Type 1): These high-level choices lay the groundwork for your entire marketing effort and are difficult to change once implemented. They require thorough analysis, data-driven insights, and careful consideration.
Examples include:
Target audience selection: Who are you trying to reach with your marketing message?
Brand positioning: How do you want your brand to be perceived in the market?
Product positioning: What unique benefit does your product offer compared to competitors?
Overall marketing budget allocation: How much are you investing in marketing, and how is it divided across various channels?
Tactical decisions (Type 2): These day-to-day choices are more flexible and adaptable. They can be tested, adjusted, and optimized based on performance data and market feedback.
Examples include:
Specific content creation for a campaign: What kind of content (e.g., blog post, video, social media post) will resonate with your target audience?
Channel selection for a campaign: Which platforms (e.g., social media, email, paid advertising) are most effective for reaching your target audience?
Budget allocation within a campaign: How much should be spent on advertising, content creation, and other aspects of a specific campaign?
Understanding the distinction between Type 1 and Type 2 decisions empowers us to:
Dedicate appropriate time and resources to each decision based on its potential impact and reversibility.
Be bold and experiment with tactical decisions, knowing they can be easily adjusted based on results.
Make strategic decisions thoughtfully and with a long-term perspective to avoid unintended consequences.
By effectively navigating the two-door analogy, marketers can build a robust and adaptable #marketingstrategy that drives growth and success.
