LinkedIn lingo can trip you up, so my public service for today is a new dictionary for you to print out and stick up on your wall. And it comes to you totally FREE of charge. Can't say fairer than that.

The 10 people you meet on LinkedIn (apart from all the awesome creators 😊) The BFF (also known as the podster) You comment 'great post' on my post and l’ll comment 'great post' on yours. Together we'll have a beautiful relationship ❤️🤣 The Stalker Turns up every morning in your DM asking ‘How are you doing?’ 😬 The Random Tagger You’ve never interacted, and you aren’t connected but somehow they’ve still managed to shoehorn you into their ailing post to try to boost views 😤 The Billy No Mates On the surface, the engagement looks great, but when you look through the comments, they are all written by the original poster 🙄 The Pied Piper of Hamlin 🐀 Thousands of followers but the posts have no substance. It’s all memes and motivational quotes 😩 The Weirdo DM’s you with just ‘Hi Dear’ - you just know it’s going to end badly 😧 The ‘Influencer’ Posts lots of selfies with flash cars, expensive jewellery and amazing holiday locations saying ‘ You too can have 10k/20k/50k months when you buy my coaching/training/transformational programme.’ 🤩 The Introvert Sets their profile picture to 1st connections only so 99.997% of people can’t see what they look like 😎 The Ar$ehole Attempts to be noticed using polarising statements designed to pi$$ people off just for engagement 😡 The Pollster Asks inane questions such as ‘Do you prefer tea or coffee’ to try to get views 🥱 BONUS -- The Passive-aggressive Prefaces their post with 'Said with love' or 'I'm saying this with love.' No, you're bloody not! 😖 Which ones have you encountered? Or perhaps it’s easier to ask which ones you have not encountered?

1 simple reason why you still haven’t kept your New Year’s resolution to write your blog (and it’s not the what you think it is) People fail to keep their website fresh with new content NOT because they don’t have time (you could find a couple hours once a month if you tried). No, the simple reason is that they just can’t be bothered to do longer form writing. I blame social media for creating notoriously short attention spans. Why bother with a blog when you can bang out about 10 posts in the same time? Here’s why… The average life of a Linkedin post is about 2 days. While the average life of a blog post is about 2 years. So yeah, maybe it takes 10 times more time and effort to write but it lasts around 365 times longer. Listen, if you can’t be writing long form, why not get me to do it? Are you putting in a hard shift in your business/job? Personal freedom is the single most important thing for me right now. Sure l could work double the hours l do and make twice the profit but it wouldn’t make me happier. ln fact, l think it would make me unhappier and stressed. Success is not always about the ££s at the end of the day.

How well do your audience know you? (Let’s face facts, l probably know only a couple hundred of my connections in real life) The bottom line is that your Linkedin network is a mishmash of ➡️people you actually know for real, in the flesh, ➡️people you feel like you know because you chat frequently but you’ve never met ➡️people you don’t know at all because they simply connected or follow you So, maybe it would be good to offer your audience some more insight into your life so you can start to move people up the list? l’ll start. Here are some things you might not know about me: 1. l used to be an accountant for the Saudi Royal family (that was an eye opener). 2. I have had a shotgun pointed at me by an angry American who was upset that l turned my car around in his driveway. He then asked me to dinner. 3. l home educated my teenage boys thru GCSEs because mainstream secondary school is an awful place for young people with neurodiversity. What can you tell your audience about you that they might not already know? Tell me in the comments below. P.S. l declined the offer of dinner and got out of there as fast as possible. P.P.S. 6-figure business? Why has that become the panacea of business? What does it even mean? £100,000 turnover? £100,000 gross profit? £100,000 profit before tax? £100,000 profit after tax? £100,000 salary + dividends taken? Frankly, NO ONE who bleats about their 6-figure business ever clarifies this. The gap between £100,000 turnover and £100,000 profit after tax is enormous. Come on people, let’s stop with all the smoke and mirrors because it’s harmful to most businesses and the reputation of the platform. Anyone can make 6 figures in turnover overnight. Just sell 20,000 £10 notes for a fiver each - simples! But it's only half the story. When you see '6 figure business' what does it mean to you?

Last week on Friday, I put up a list of 100 cities and asked people to tot up their points for places they've visited. It did not go unnoticed that almost one third of the cities on the list were in the US. So this week, I've compiled my own, much more diverse, list of countries. Let's see what people make of this... What from LinkedIn are you putting into room 101? Here's my list: 1. Fluffluencers who regurgitate the same old content day in and day out. 2. People who use those annoying little arrows ↳. 3. The ones who comment 'Great post', especially on posts that are totally shite. 4. People who mock up a Tweet in Canva to use as a visual in LinkedIn - just lame.
