Forbes 30 Under 30 listers Alice Deng and Lawrence Lin Murata announced a $30 million venture capital raise today for their tech startup Slope. They now count the likes of OpenAI's Sam Altman and Y Combinator as investors. Slope offers short-term financing and payment processing solutions to B2B clients. And they've implemented #AI to assist with various parts of the business, including fraud analysis. “There are a lot of fraud management vendors focusing on B2C scenarios, but not many focusing on B2B,” Meng Liu, a senior analyst at Forrester told me. TL;DR: * In 2022, #VCfunding was a record $175B, but... * ...deal value had already dropped by 25% vs 2021 * In 2023, 40% of #VC stopped dealmaking altogether... * ...cutting funding to 2013 levels In the last decade, unicorns: * Ballooned 14x, from 39 to 532 * Reflecting the growth of compute capacity (Moore's Law) * 78% are #B2B, almost inverted from #B2C in 2013 * The most valuable one is OpenAI, #AI being the #megatrend * Only 3% are public though, vs 41% in 2013 * 60% are ZIRPicorns (zero interest rate darlings in 2021/22) * 40% are already valued <$1B in secondary markets * The exit market is frozen, maybe signs of slow thawing? * Capital efficiency is down to 7x from 26x in 2013 (difficult ROI for employees) We're back to fundamentals, margin and execution.
