🌟 Merz Spotlight: Panel Insights from the Handelsblatt Procurement Summit 🌍💼 Merz’s Head of Strategic Sourcing, Martina Boxberger participated in a dynamic panel discussion at last week’s 2024 Handelsblatt Procurement Summit in Düsseldorf, where Sourcing expertise met under one roof. What emerged from the summit was a clear consensus: the future of procurement hinges on a delicate balance of sustainability, resilience, and efficiency. Decarbonization was a central theme, with discussions on how collaborative efforts, such as the #LkSG and #CSDDD initiatives, could pave the way for decarbonizing supply chains and mitigating climate change. Yet, the debate lingered on whether these frameworks act as enablers or preventers of progress. Martina Boxberger offered insights in a panel regarding “The different worlds of sustainability - Are European market players at risk of being pushed out?” where she and fellow panelists examined the pros and cons of differing sustainability standards and the efficacy of ESG measures. This report crystalizes the vital role of CPOs in sustainability. Sustainable sourcing is commensurate with resilient sourcing, since companies will have the leverage to create an ecosystem of diverse suppliers willing to comply with their Scope 3 requirements. CPOs will need to development business processes that can formally measure and track Scope 3 supplier performance and relate it to achieving their CQQ objectives. #sustainability #sustainableprocurement #sustainablesupplychain

Thank you Egon Zehnder and World Economic Forum for this in-depth look at the role of CPO's and their teams in driving #sustainability, especially carbon reduction, through the supply chain. I can recommend this write-up for any procurement leader. As Daniel Helmig (and also a certain super hero) used to say, "With great power comes great responsibility". CPO's and their teams control massive budgets...If they choose to, they can have massive influence over the ESG priorities of their supply base. I encourage all CPO's to step up and tackle climate change with their suppliers head-on.
