So, are these Olympics a genuine green effort, or just greenwashing? 𝑯𝒆𝒓𝒆'𝒔 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒈𝒐𝒐𝒅 𝒏𝒆𝒘𝒔: • Carbon budget halved: They ditched the unrealistic "positive carbon" claim and aim for a 50% cut compared to past Games. • Repurposing existing venues: Only one new building! The rest? Existing facilities getting a makeover. • Focus on "ARO" (Avoid, Reduce, Offset): Prioritizing reducing emissions before resorting to offsets. 𝑩𝒖𝒕 𝒄𝒐𝒏𝒄𝒆𝒓𝒏𝒔 𝒓𝒆𝒎𝒂𝒊𝒏: • 1.58 million tons of CO2 emissions is still significant! Transportation is the biggest culprit, so watch from home if you're far away! • Lack of transparency on carbon assessment: We need clearer methods and data to hold them accountable. 𝑳𝒐𝒐𝒌𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒂𝒉𝒆𝒂𝒅: • Downsizing the event: Reduce infrastructure needs and travel emissions. • Rotate host cities: Leverage existing facilities and minimize disruption. • Renewable energy: Power the Games with clean sources. The first Earth Summit in 1972 had an impact on the Munich Olympics, where a first interest was shown in giving the event a green face. The second summit, held in Rio twenty years later, was also reflected in the Barcelona 92 games. There, some ecological measures were implemented and the mural "Pledge for the Earth" was installed. Those games marked the end of amateurism and the Olympics fully entered a commercial era, which poses a big challenge in terms of footprint. The challenge in this 21st century has been to reduce this growing footprint, as it is one of the most important mega-events on Earth. Paris 2024 promises sustainability: less food waste, less single-use plastics, reuse of materials, and a future social use of some facilities. Mindset Shift: From Make-and-Break to Sustainable Solutions Reflecting on my career, I realized the events industry often embraced a make-and-break mindset, contributing to environmental challenges. We challenged the norm at Chat'r, rethinking our approach to creating sustainable events without compromising aesthetics. 🌿💡 2. Total Energies Stand: Redefining Sustainability in Design Our journey was pivotal at the NAMPO Cape Expo, where we designed a stand for Total Energies. Choosing intelligent design and construction practices, we generated just one plastic bag worth of landfill waste. It's proof that sustainability doesn't mean sacrificing creativity – it enhances it! 3. Exxaro Sustainability Summit 2023: Innovation in Remote Events Fast forward to the Exxaro Sustainability Summit 2023, where we faced the challenge of creating a 100% off-the-grid event space. We minimized our carbon footprint by optimizing airflow in the marquee and sourcing biodegradable food service items. The result? A seamless event with minimal disturbance to the environment. 🌍🦓 4. EXSA Green Event Award: Recognizing Our Commitment Our efforts culminated in receiving the EXSA Green Event Award. 🏆 It's not just an accolade; it's a testament to our commitment to sustainable practices in the events industry. 💚🌎 5. I represented Global Sustainable Future Network, GSFN at the Community Creates Mobility conference held in Austria and also online on the 21, May 2024. It gave a perspective on how world has become more Sustainable, Diverse and Inclusive taking on CO emission and mobility challenges for a flourishing society linking it to the #UN #SDG 11: #Sustainable #Cities & #Communities. * Shortly what I presented* Ideas for Mobility Challenges and Innovation: 1. Implementing #smart #mobility solutions, such as integrated mobility platforms, real-time transit information systems, and smart traffic management systems, to improve efficiency and reduce congestion. 2. Exploring alternative transportation modes, such as electric vehicles, shared mobility services, and micro-mobility solutions (e.g., e-scooters, bike-sharing), to reduce emissions and promote sustainable mobility. 3. Designing inclusive transportation options for individuals with disabilities and limited mobility, including accessible vehicles, infrastructure, and services. 4. Promoting active transportation initiatives, such as pedestrian-friendly infrastructure, bike lanes, and walkable neighborhoods, to encourage physical activity and reduce reliance on cars. 5. Harnessing data analytics and predictive modeling to optimize transportation networks, improve route planning, and enhance the overall passenger experience. Potential Areas of Collaboration: 1. Collaborating with local governments and transportation authorities to pilot innovative mobility solutions and gather feedback from communities. 2. Partnering with academic institutions and research organizations to conduct studies and surveys on mobility patterns, preferences, and behaviors. 3. Engaging with private sector companies and startups to explore partnership opportunities for developing and implementing new mobility technologies and services. 4. Working with community organizations and advocacy groups to advocate for policies and initiatives that support sustainable and equitable transportation. 5. Collaborating with other design and engineering firms to share best practices, exchange ideas, and co-create solutions for mobility challenges.
