Too many job seekers are pissed off, frustrated and feeling invisible. When is this madness going to end? I continue to receive countless messages every day of people reaching out and sharing their horror stories. And my heart goes out to each and every one of them. Candidates pour their heart and soul into completing an application, interviewing and then go through the dreaded waiting game for the company's decision. And way too many times never even hear back from the company at all. Companies need to understand how mentally and emotionally exhausting it is to go through this job market right now. We need to start humanizing the hiring process... And actually care, truly care, about people's feelings. #jobsearch #jobseekers

Exactly how I feel today. I woke up and tried to jump right into to reapplying once again. I opened up the first application and just began to cry.. it’s always no response or rejections. And I know that I’d be a great worker, I just need a company to take a chance on me and give me the opportunity to show them… I have countless of references who would give stellar reviews. This market is awful and disheartening 😞

And employers and companies need to understand these statistics too: 1 - between 96% and 98% of people who never received feedback from an application will never apply to the same company again 2 - 85% of candidates who applied for a role, but were unsuccessful AND received feedback REAPPLIED to the same company again. So here’s the big evolutionary gain……… If you’re an employer, bother your arse to reach out to candidates as often as you possible can Whilst you are, many won’t. Consequently, you will have a larger talent pool to choose from. And your brand worth will increase exponentially. You know it makes sense. Don’t be the dinosaur 🦖 🦕 - we all know how that went. Thanks for raising this point again,Melissa Grabiner

I am very fortunate I currently have a job, however I feel for those looking. It doesn't take more than a minimal effort from a company to at least send a pre-formatted rejection letter if a company has decided to move in a different direction. However, internal recruiters do themselves no favors when they ghost candidates while still in the interview process. Back when I was in the market the number of hr recruiters who were super excited to speak to me but then all of a sudden "fell off the planet" was surprising to me. If a candidate is expected to show up on time for a scheduled interview/call the company should as well. There are several places I would never apply based on how I heard them treat friends or colleagues. A little politeness and respect goes a long way...and should go both ways...

Couldn’t agree more. In part, this is due to a cycle of ineffective or underdeveloped leaders who, once they are given the formalized roles, don’t understand how to create a culture and climate that permeates every aspect of what they do, not the least of which is how they hire and onboard people (i.e. how to treat people). While frustrating, if you’re on the job market and are treated poorly, you dodged a bullet because the best an organization will ever treat you is on the way in; life is too short to work for less than stellar leaders.

Can I respectfully ask what this post is doing/who it's actually serving? It doesn't address any sort of steps towards change. If anything, it riles job seekers up more - it's confirmation bias that only hurts them. Yes, the hiring market is a nightmare. Yes, job seekers have been going through the ringer. (I'm a staunch advocate for job seekers + candidates and to do my part, I share a ton of free resources to help them along with facilitating introductions). Yes, there are some bad apples involved in the hiring process that absolutely shouldn't be. Yes, some companies exhibit poor hiring practices. But numbers 3 and 4 aren't blanket statements. And there are a few realities that have to be addressed: -Recruiting teams are spread RAZOR thin -Competition is fiercer than ever -Companies make hiring decisions based on what makes the most sense for business Posts like this just pit job seekers against against recruiters and companies which helps nobody.

As a Talent Manager who has been recently laid off and is now a job seeker again, I couldn't agree more. Candidate experience is the focus of so many initiatives and OKRs in the talent space, yet the experience of being a job seeker is the worst I've ever experienced. Countless people are all expressing the same concerns, yet we cannot do anything to change things unless we are on the inside (and getting there is a long road). Applying to countless roles only to be left in the dark has an immense negative impact on one's mental health.

I would love to see a move away from ATS. A resume and LinkedIn profile tell you everything you need to know about a candidate. I understand that "they" like it due to efficiency, building a database, etc. BUT, it takes valuable time away from job seekers. Our time is as valuable as theirs. It's disrespectful to expect a candidate to painstakingly fill out a database record for each job they apply for. There aren't ways to auto-fill most of them either. I filled out one yesterday that took 45 minutes. 45 minutes I could have used in a different, more productive way.

My anxiety goes through the roof when this happens. Many companies especially staffing agencies are NOTORIOUS for never getting back to you.

Melissa Grabiner thanks for always sharing in the most positive and supportive ways! I am going on 10 months of searching and I’m going to lose my home soon. We spent everything we had saved and for retirement when we had to fight parental alienation of our daughter in a 5 year legal battle. It so hard not being given an opportunity to prove that I will be loyal and hardworking even if they think I’m “over qualified”. My heart goes out to all of you who are in this same situation.
