I wanted to share some of our latest work. Using a central median nucleus for patients with multifocal refractory epilepsy, we employed a configuration with a 10mm anterior microelectrode and a 3mm central macroelectrode. In the upper region of the recording, some thalamic beta waves can be observed, which become more evident if the patient has a BIS (Bispectral Index) below 40. Between the ViM (ventral intermediate nucleus) and the CeM (central median nucleus), some high-frequency firing can be found, and then near the target, there is either silence or some Bursting Cells. An anterior macroelectrode stimulus is applied to verify that we are in the correct position, as this stimulus activates ascending fibers of Vc (ventral caudal nucleus) if correctly placed. One of the first major objectives in my Ph.D has been accomplished: My team has received approval from the Medical Research Ethics Committee (VMK) to start the process of recruiting participants for testing two new ultrasound methods for the carotids, developed in collaboration with the Technical University of Denmark. The two methods should make it possible to conduct pressure- and flow estimation in the carotid arteries. Our aim is to improve our diagnostic and understanding of carotid stenosis; which is major cause of stroke.
