Maybe interesting? 🤷 I've seen a lot of threads on LI recently about the absurd difficulty of getting a "Junior" developer role. Code challenges, portfolio requirements, generally bars that seem high for what should be an "entry level" position. Curiosity took me searching for differences between senior and junior over time, and the numbers in the screenshot would suggest companies are getting the smallest "discount" on a junior dev that we've seen in 6 years. That might be interesting... ...but this is almost worthless data!😅 I got these numbers from a combination of Glassdoor reported averages and the internet archives "Wayback Machine". Not remotely a reliable system. They are probably very skewed by what month Wayback had cached for a given year, how Glassdoor defined "junior" at that time, etc. Anyone know of a better public source of Junior vs Senior developer salary over time? My google skills have failed me so far.

Full-stack Engineering Leader With Proven Record of Building High-Performing, Quality-Oriented Teams
I've never understood companies that limit themselves to hiring only folks who've already worked on their stack. Sure, if you can hire somebody who's a real expert in part of your stack, then you should; but otherwise, any good developer is going to learn the language/framework faster than they'll learn how your code actually works. Understanding your unique problems and how you've uniquely addressed them inside your application's code takes many months longer than learning a language or framework, and there's no better way to learn that language or framework than by working on actual production code written in it.

In my 8 years in tech, from startup to Google, the top 1% of software engineers, data scientists and MLEs I worked with all practice this principle ↓ A junior SWE, DS or MLE wastes countless hours from one project to the next, rebuilding every code work from scratch. A PRO, on the other hand, saves a ton of hours by creating reusable modules, not just for his or her project but also for colleagues! The effort of creating reusable code may require additional effort, but in the long run, you will greatly reap the benefit. This means less late-night and weekend work, and more time to pursue the things that you love. Starting now, consider this - three strikes, and you automate. Like this tip? Spread the word by smashing 👍 and re-posting!

🚀 Here's a simple guide on how to ace your tech job application: 1. Dive deep into the company and role you're applying for. Understand their values, products, and the skills they're seeking. (Remuneration is key. Don't forget, you're there to make money 💵) 2. Highlight your relevant skills and experiences. Customise your resume for each application to match the job description. You're allowed to lie a little bit on your resume. Just be sure to learn the skills you lied about before your interview (if you get any). 3. If you have personal or professional projects, include them in your portfolio. Showcasing your work is the only way to prove that you can do what you say you do. If you don't, consider contributing to open-source projects, building pet projects of your own or just doing both. 4. Connect with professionals in the industry. Attend tech meetups, join online communities, and leverage platforms like LinkedIn or Open source communities to expand your network. 5. Brush up on your coding skills, especially if you're applying for technical roles. Practice coding challenges and algorithms regularly. Yes solve practice problems on leetcode or try out problems from other competitive programming platforms e.g. codeforces, HackerRank... 6. Research common interview questions and practice your responses. Be ready to showcase your problem-solving skills and enthusiasm for the role. Finally, you need a little bit (or a lot depending on your skill level) of witchcraft🧙🏾 (or juju magic) to get a job in the market right now. Am I missing anything? 😄

LI friends! Let’s help my little brother source his next role 🙌 Which folks in my network are looking for a strong back-end engineer? Associate level, looking for his second eng role to be a new challenge. Passive candidate, still in his current role. More details 👇 --- Blurb from him: "I’m looking for another backend role, ideally on lower level, performance critical services. My current work is on the backend of a time series database, which I’m liking, but I’m interested in challenges that come with scale. I love working on compilers/interpreters as well and have a little experience in my current role, but that work is sparse and I don’t plan to pursue it. An ideal place would be Netflix - I love reading their engineering blogs. I find the problems they face fascinating and would love a challenge on that level." --- He’s one of the most innately curious people I know. As a little boy, he used to take apart electronics just to see if he could figure out how to put them back together (my mom loved this) 😂 Not only that, he’s the most dependable person I’ve ever met- a family man with 4 small girls. To give you an idea of his character, last week he dropped everything to spend two evenings helping Alex with our electrical and refused to accept any payment. I don’t know many folks willing to go in the crawl space underneath the house just to help someone out! Let me know if you want an intro or more details. p.s. feel free to engage/share/comment for reach if this isn't you but you want to support! Thank you in advance for helping my family 💜
