How we re-did a project a day before the deadline🤐
"This is a case about my fuck-up and the importance of always doubting everything!" — one of our project managers said about this project. But let's start at the beginning.
We received a large gaming localisation project, 7,000+ words into 8 languages. The customer was a long-standing client of ours. They give us rather specific instructions for every project, and our native speakers do not always adhere to those. That is why we follow the work process closely.
This time the customer's request included the following: "These and similar words and phrases — Daily Tournament, "Sports" section, Daily Lottery etc. — should be present in the translation."
Our PM understood the instruction to mean that these words must NOT be translated from English and decided not to bother the customer with "stupid" questions.
Then the day before the deadline came...
All the files were already checked and prepared for delivery. And the customers sent us another project saying: "Translate the same words: Daily Tournament, "Sports" section, Daily Lottery (as in the previous project)."
"I was shocked!" — the project manager says.
It turned out that these words should have been translated, and we misunderstood the customer and failed to clarify the issue we had doubts about.
"Surely, I promptly wrote to all the native speakers, we made all the necessary changes and delivered the correct variant... The project was huge, the customer paid a lot of money for it, and it was a great responsibility," — the PM said.
As a result, the customer received the correct translation in time. And we received another reminder that clarifying the details with the customers and understanding the instructions correctly is always better than guessing and rectifying the mistake a few hours before the deadline.
