This innovative program speeds up drug development, taking only 6 months to go from drug substance to Phase I trials. Informative read on the nuances of U.S. drug pricing (which is, contrary to popular belief, not the leading driver of healthcare spend). The current approach is by no means a perfect system, but understanding the complexities can allow us to acknowledge the societal trade offs of higher U.S. pricing (i.e., sustained new product development) and discourage “symptomatic” policy that merely caps profit rather than addressing the root cause. For a more in-depth perspective (and how life science venture capital plays an important role in mitigating the risk associated with biopharma investment), I would recommend reading “The Great American Drug Deal” by Peter Kolchinsky.
