  MEDICAL DEVICE MONDAY: This week we highlight another Lima Corporate (now Enovis) product: the “SMR Stemless”. This is a bone Sparing Implant based on our established SMR Heritage, which also features a TT proximal ring. There are many benefits to this product. It allows orthopaedic surgeons to perform anatomic, reverse or CTA head prosthesis using reduced instrumentation. It offers the possibility to choose the most appropriate solution for each patient’s individual anatomy and the SMR Stemless has been designed to achieve strong primary fixation and favour osteointegetion. This product is a universal inlay component, designed to provide optimal solution for a wide range of pathologies. The wide range of sizes and humeral head adaptors facilitate anatomic reconstruction, helping to restore the humeral head to its originality. Ask any surgeon about the most common sources of image artifacts and orthopaedic imagery, and they'll tell you that metal is the one they have the most difficulty with. ➖ TGA Application ➖   #Orthocell is pleased to announce it has applied to the Therapeutic Good Administration (TGA) for Australian market approval for its SmrtGraft™ tendon repair device, in preparation for its introduction into the Australian tendon repair and regeneration market. The regulatory application follows positive results from Orthocell’s tendon regeneration study, indicating that SmrtGraft reduces the rate of treatment failure and the need for revision surgeries. The results from this study were published in the highly regarded Journal of Orthopaedic Translation in 2021. Orthocell Managing Director, Paul Anderson, said: “We are delighted to announce the Australian regulatory application for our SmrtGraft tendon repair product. Australia is an important stepping stone to other very large and attractive international target markets, including the USA. This is another significant milestone in our product expansion strategy. Once approved, it will be Orthocell’s third revenue generating medical device available in Australia.” SmrtGraft will be the third revenue generating product to be launched by the Company. The significant addressable market for SmrtGraft, is estimated to be worth more than US$1.2 billion annually, with over 800,000 surgical repairs of rotator cuff tendons alone completed in just the AUS, USA and EU per year. Something to think about for #arthroplasty surgeons…. Recent study from Girard et al (screenshot below). Comparison of blood metal ion levels between patients with metal on metal hip resurfacing with patients with a commonly used #tkr. Cobalt levels significantly higher in the patients with TKRs. It is known that levels above 1.5 can cause metal sensitivity in patients with certain genotypes. Testing metal ions in hip resurfacing: standard clinical practise. Testing metal ions in patients with knees (which almost all contain cobalt chrome) is essentially never done. It just doesn’t make sense. When is this subject going to make it in to mainstream #jointreplacement meetings?
