Power dividers and combiners are a crucial part of every RF/microwave system. In order to evenly distribute an RF signal into two paths, one must use a matched divider topology to properly divide the incident wave. The Wilkinson power divider is a widely used structure that has excellent insertion loss (low attenuation), return loss (input match) and isolation (two output paths don’t interfere) characteristics. Multiple stages can be used to significantly increase the bandwidth. This 2-stage Wilkinson divider has a center frequency of 2.45GHz but can be used from 500MHz to 5GHz for an ultra-wideband performance! Best of all, the power divider also works as a power combiner when reversed! With over 15 years of experience in RF/microwaves, Echoic Engineering commands the expertise to solve any circuit design challenge. We work with a range of the most advanced RF/microwave technologies. WHAT'S YOUR OPINION on the optimal #RF PCB stack-up? Radio-frequency board stack-up plays a crucial role in the performance and functionality of RF #circuits. It involves careful considerations such as isolation between traces and components, power supply decoupling, the number of layers, arrangement, and placement of #components. While a standard 4-layer RF stack-up is commonly used, the debate centers around whether this stack-up design is truly optimal for all RF applications. Affirmative argument: - Isolation and interference reduction: The standard 4-layer RF stack-up, with RF components and traces on the top layer followed by ground and power planes, effectively minimizes interference between RF and non-RF components. This layout ensures optimal performance and #signalintegrity. - Ground return path: The immediate ground plane beneath the RF components provides a low #impedance path for the ground return current. This reduces noise and ensures stable operation of the RF circuit. - Suitability for small RF boards: The compact arrangement of the standard 4-layer stack-up makes it ideal for small RF boards where space is limited. It strikes a balance between performance and size constraints, making it suitable for various applications. Negative argument: - Limited flexibility: The standard 4-layer #radiofrequency stack-up may not offer enough flexibility for complex RF designs with specific requirements. Different applications may demand unique stack-up configurations to optimize performance, which cannot be achieved with a one-size-fits-all approach. - Signal integrity challenges: While the ground plane helps in reducing interference, it can also introduce signal integrity challenges such as ground loops and impedance mismatches. This may affect the overall performance of the RF circuit, especially in #highfrequency applications. - Alternative stack-up designs: There are alternative stack-up designs, such as asymmetric stack-ups or incorporating additional layers, that may better suit certain RF applications. These designs offer enhanced control over signal integrity and isolation, potentially outperforming the standard 4-layer stack-up in specific scenarios. You can read our blog on the 7 factors that impact RF boards and let us know what you think! https://lnkd.in/g52Nuacz
