When you think about the your dream life, what does it entail? Besides some of the tangible things like a specific job title or money, who are YOU in your dream life? 🌟Someone who goes to bed before 12am and works out in the morning? 🌟Someone who reaches out and networks with folks on a weekly basis? 🌟Someone who creates art just for fun? 🌟Someone who meditates and journals frequently? 🌟Someone who volunteers in their free time? It might be helpful to write down what your dream life looks like, and then select one or two things you can start implementing TODAY. You do not have to wait until everything is perfect to take the risk of getting started. There is endless talent in this world, and we are all carrying unique and valuable gifts. I’ve come to learn that decisions we might view as disappointments can sometimes be redirecting us to the right path. I share this story often when speaking to students, but I was rejected from my university’s journalism fellowship, countless internships and several entry level jobs I applied to. Each rejection felt so personal, and I couldn’t understand what I was doing wrong. But each decision lead me closer to my true purpose and calling, an incredibly fulfilling career path (one that I was told wasn’t even possible as a college student). So keep dreaming big! Feel the hurt and pain, but know that something better is usually waiting for on the other side of your hurdles. What better way to commemorate Juneteenth than talking about resilience! It’s a unique quality that I’m sure is helpful in every industry, but let me share a bit about why it’s important for those in journalism, digital media and communincations. Simply put, things will rarely go exactly as you planned them. No matter how many pre-interviews, production meetings or schedules you create - the news gods tend to have a way of flipping the script often. So what can you do? 🔹Stay calm, this will allow you to execute a back up plan with a steady mind 🔹Have some emergency plans in your back pocket, make sure you always check the weather and connect with an alternative venue if you’re filming outside 🔹Stay in constant communication with your team and managers to update them on any changes When reporting in the field I’ve taken the mindset that it’s not really “IF” there will be a road bump, but “WHAT” the road bump will be.
