We're excited to share a groundbreaking development in renewable fuels! Researchers from RWTH Aachen University, the Max Planck Institute for Chemical Energy Conversion, and ETH Zürich, including Walter Leitner and André Bardow, have developed HyFiT, a new synthetic fuel. 🚀🔋 HyFiT fuels can be used directly in today's engines, significantly reducing particulate matter and nitrogen oxides emissions. Produced from renewable resources like green electricity, water, biomass, and CO₂, these fuels close the carbon cycle and utilize existing industrial infrastructure. Our study shows HyFiT fuels have a superior environmental profile, outperforming even battery-based technologies, especially over long distances. This innovation marks a significant step toward sustainable, carbon-neutral transportation. As the calendar turns to 2024, our societal sustainability goals are more urgent than ever. We need implement sustainable technologies to upgrade biomass and waste carbon to fuels and products at an unprecedented scale-and fast. My colleagues at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory and I have put together some thoughts about shortcomings that have plagued efforts to implement solutions in our field in the past and how to #scaleup processes more effectively in the future. We are happy to announce that one of our recent papers from the PESLL lab group - Technion, has been selected for the journal cover of Sustainable Energy and Fuels (RSC). Raymond Rahamim Batten presents a comprehensive life cycle environmental and cost evaluation for the production of sustainable aviation fuel from biomass. "A sustainable aviation fuel pathway from biomass" highlights the potential of biomass-derived cellulosic sugars for the production of dimethylcyclooctane (DMCO) jet fuel. This innovative approach shows significant reductions in greenhouse gas emissions compared to traditional petroleum-based jet fuel, offering a promising path towards more sustainable aviation. Over the next 20 months, CyanoCapture will be providing our biological CO2 capture services to the H2Boost project that has received £5M in funding from the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (UK). The project will result in a full demonstration site that will convert biowaste into hydrogen energy. CyanoCapture’s technology will be deployed as the tool for sequestering the CO2 emissions generated from the anaerobic digestion step that produces hydrogen. Our technology converts this captured CO2 back into biomass for further downstream use or to lock away the carbon in a stable form. If successful, the consortium led by the Biorenewables Development Centre prove that we can create a sustainable route for the UK to generate hydrogen from biowaste whilst capturing the CO2 in the process.
