We have a National Medical Workforce Strategy 2021-2031 in Australia that most doctors I tell don’t know about. 🩺👨⚕️👩🏾⚕️🧑🏻⚕️ Priority 5 is “Build a flexible and responsive medical workforce”. Part of achieving said priority is “improve doctor wellbeing”. 🌱🌱 The business case has been made the world over. The research is clear, well doctors are better doctors in EVERY respect. Patients get better care, feel better and safer while they are in healthcare and have better health outcomes. 🛌🤒😵💫🙂 Colleagues and team mates have better experience at work because their doctor colleagues are often the team leader. And we know from Gallup and others that the biggest impact on you having a good day at work is your boss, and if you have someone who you regard as a good friend at work. 🙋🏽♂️🙋🏼♀️ And doctors feel fulfilled and want to keep being doctors. 🤓😊 SO WHY are hundreds of doctors all over the country having to make a business case for their own wellbeing?! The BUSINESS CASE HAS BEEN MADE. Is accepted enough to be a nation government priority. 😳 Please if you are a hospital decision maker sit down with your senior medical staff without an agenda. Sit with the intention to listen deeply and learn. 👂🏼👂🏼🤫 Ask them what will make the biggest difference to your wellbeing - it won’t be the same in every department. And set about making some of it happen, together. 🤲🏻🤲🏼🤲🏿 Funding is always tight in health. It’s always been. There is no hospital, with no doctors. There is no patient safety, no staff wellbeing with no senior staff to teach and mentor. Doctor wellbeing is a priority, it underpins the rest. All other healthcare KPIs rest on healthcare worker wellbeing. And it’s a workplace right enshrined in our OH&S laws. All workers have a right to expect to be safe at work. Good work adds to health. Enough with pretending it doesn’t really matter. Healthcare needs a different name if it can’t get this right. Relative to other countries Australia is doing well for doctors. Do not take it for granted, there are so many doctors burnt out, burning out, giving up their medical purpose in life for something more nourishing. Stop wasting clinicians precious time with making business cases. We are in the fourth year of the National Strategy. The first step of implementation is deep inquiry and relationship building. Doctors are well and truly ready, they are waiting for you administrators to be all in for implementation. Start today, go visit some clinicians, be curious, open, interested. Make sure your doctors feel seen, heard and valued. 💔Healthcare lacks empathy…ironic? This grand oversight is causing cracks in the system to deepen…. Let me explain… ✅ One out of four clinicians in the U.S. are considering leaving healthcare, primarily due to unrelenting burnout. ✅ Among doctors and nurses who want to stay in healthcare, about a third are considering switching employers. ✅ Of those considering leaving the field entirely, 89% cite burnout as the main cause. ✅ ~40% of all clinicians surveyed say they don’t have the resources they need to operate at full potential. ✅ 59% don’t believe their teams are adequately staffed. ✅ ~65% report they are experiencing burnout in 2022, up four percentage points from a 2021 study. ✅ 40% had a physician resign or retire early in the past year due to burnout. ✅ 51% have considered leaving for a different job in healthcare. ✅ ~41% considered leaving the practice of medicine and more than one-third (36%) considered early retirement. Some examples... 1️⃣ Payment lacks empathy: The most prominent form of payment (fee-for-service) incentives volume and administrative compliance. The overhead required to keep up is crushing. 2️⃣ Leadership lacks empathy: The easiest and most profitable path for business in healthcare has created bad actors that disassociate from the reality that their primary objective should be to create the conditions for the best patient care. 3️⃣ Technology lacks empathy: Designed for #1 and by #2 cares little about patient outcomes or clinical experience. We can do better. 💙 Empathy is actually the solution, and it comes in many forms, for example… ➡️ Support: Communities, coaching, reforming the leadership structure of healthcare organizations. ➡️ Payment: 1) Find ways to tame the leakage of payment operations into care, 2) Embrace value-based care, 3) Back to #1 😉. ➡️ Technology: Ensure that an actual practicing clinical perspective is at the product core. 📣 Our latest PHIRST Connect briefing has been published, evaluating three services that prescribed activities in green spaces for people living with a range of health needs. Six main themes, structured around the APEASE criteria, were generated. https://lnkd.in/ga8VW77i (briefing report tab). Check out below some key take home messages from the evaluation 👇 Acceptability: Positive perceptions of the programmes were enhanced by staff communication skills and variety of activities on offer. The provision of another referral option alongside physical activity or medication was appreciated my service users and staff. Practicability: The programmes could be made easier to engage with for service users with greater awareness/knowledge from referrers, better digital communication, and transport to activities. For staff, better IT integration of referral processes would be beneficial. Effectiveness: A range of benefits were experienced by service users including social, emotional, and physical, and the programmes were perceived to provide mental health support. Affordability: Activity sessions were very often free or low cost, and this was viewed as key to ongoing engagement. Limiting the need for equipment and offering sessions in locations with good transport links can ensure continued affordability. Spillover effects: A variety of positive social effects were reported around shared experiences, a sense of belonging, and being open with others, alongside gaining new skills and experiences. Equity: Although activity providers made consistent efforts to make activities accessible, there were still some barriers for people living with mobility issues. Green activities were also sometimes perceived as less suitable for men or different cultural groups. Recommendations: These findings suggest that better IT, data linking, and routine data collection would be hugely beneficial. Furthermore, continued investment in staff training, provision of local activity options, and support for people with complex needs is essential. Value- Based Health Care requires a large cultural and transformational change for the health community. To embed principles of VBHC all parts of the system need to be supported to evolve, from policy through to clinical encounters The healthcare workforce is the cornerstone of health service delivery and quality patient care. Valuing and protecting healthcare workers is critical for the safety of people and communities and for ensuring a thriving and sustainable healthcare community ready to explore and implement VBHC. The Deeble Institute for Health Policy Perspective Brief ‘Towards a thriving healthcare workforce’, explores the relationship between workforce and wellbeing, identifying and discussing those areas where policy action should be taken to protect healthcare worker safety and wellbeing - now and into the future. This includes: 1. supporting health service leaders to drive cultural change to prioritise wellbeing of staff; 2. addressing imbalances between workforce supply and skill-mix demand; 3. implementing a data monitoring system on work-related risk factors (psychosocial hazards); and 4. facilitating access to evidence-based interventions to protect wellbeing. This strategy should encompass the definition of a series of goals that support the long-term objective of change (change needs investment and time), moving forward in steps (work plans), including the implementation and monitoring of effects by use of existing data sources and methodologies as well as the creation of mechanisms to further guide the direction of change towards high impact good health and wellbeing.  5) Creating Workforce Solutions for healthcare institutions via new platforms Looking for new ways to support recruitment and retention (currently 18m shortfall predicted by 2030) while creating new and meaningful jobs - supporting the COVID19 recovery.  6) Harnessing Digital Solutions to enhance information and meaning. En nuestro tercer año…3 years…Acacia Network is working with local Puerto Rican Health partners - Sistema de Salud Menonita, Corporación SAMOS, Equality Clinic, Migrant Health Center, Salud Integral de la Montaña, Estancia Serena, Casa Provincia- to promote resiliency and prevent burnout among healthcare workers American Rescue Plan is to reduce burnout and promote mental health and wellness among healthcare workers. Acacia Network is proud that our healthcare partner, La Casa de Salud In New York City has been granted  from the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) to support healthcare entities and Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs) in Puerto Rico, through the “Promoting Resilience and Mental Health Among Health Professional Workforce (PRMHW)” Program.The purpose of the PRMHW Program is to provide support to healthcare organizations and providers within medically underserved communities, in order to establish, enhance, or expand evidence-based programs to promote resilience, mental health, and wellness among healthcare workers.The program will take place over the course of three years and will be carried out in collaboration with our local Puerto Rico health partners from our Acacia/Agendas Comunes Coalition.Among other key approaches, Agendas Comunes partners will seek to:Establish long-term screening and prevention programs to identify and address signs of burnout or mental distress among healthcare workers;Implement evidence-based preventive strategies to help healthcare workers adopt a better work-life balance and self-care approaches;Conduct psychological interventions to provide strategies and trainings to address stress management, mental distress, and burnout;Provide access to professional support and mental health resources through a network of behavioral health providers;Build a “social determinants of health” network to encourage local CBOs to become part of a digital resource & referrals platform that helps individuals find access to local social services and resources;Address stigma and dispel misconceptions among healthcare providers about mental health, in order to build a culture of resilience and wellness.This is an important step to address the critical need for mental health support among healthcare workers, many of whom have worked tirelessly throughout the COVID-19 pandemic to save countless lives, and for ensuring that these programs reach vulnerable communities where they are needed most in Puerto Rico

Great to see the growth of advanced primary care (APC). Bring healthcare to the workforce and provide better access during or close to work hours. Some of these clinics are now offering shared hours with other local employers to further justify the investment.
