Last week marked the closing of a 3-year-long research project, GreenAM, which explored the possibilities for making additive manufacturing more sustainable. In collaboration with several organizations, GreenAM investigated methods to reliably assess the sustainability performance of AM in terms of sustainable material usage and environmental impact, intending to identify potential improvements for AM to further contribute to more sustainable manufacturing. Potential solutions were investigated for several already identified, highly challenging AM sustainability hotspots (such as material re-use rate and the energy efficiency of selected AM processes), relying on a strong coupling between new, fundamental, material-oriented insights and original AM technological developments. We are pleased to have contributed to this research project, helping us advance our progress toward our sustainability goals, and thank VLAIO for their valuable support.
