Frustrated. Three young men from a Football Club in WA stepped up to organise a Mental Health Workshop with us for their footy club, aiming to make a positive impact on their community. However, the club's board decided against it, citing concerns about the workshop impacting their performance close to finals. It's disheartening to see young men being dismissed when trying to contribute positively to their club. The club's focus on alcohol-based fundraisers leading up to the year-end raises questions about priorities and the impact of binge drinking on mental health. Prioritising wins over the well-being of players sends a concerning message. When will community sports take mental health seriously, especially after recent tragic events? It's time to shift focus towards well-being initiatives and create safe environments for athletes to thrive both on and off the field. #MentalHealth #CommunitySport #WellBeingInitiatives

The Arsenal, England and mental health legend that is Tony Adams is joining us for our Captain’s Christmas Carol Concert ⚽️ FOOTBALL - ARSENAL Tony Adams spent his entire 22 year playing career at Arsenal FC. He is the most successful Arsenal Captain of all time - winning four top flight division titles, three FA Cups, two Football League Cups, a UEFA Cup Winners' Cup, and three FA Community Shields. He is the only player in English football history to have captained a title-winning team in three different decades. And is included in the Football League 100 Legends. A statue honouring Adams was unveiled at The Emirates stadium on 9 December 2011. In 2023 Tony was inducted into the Premier League of Hall Fame. FOOTBALL - ENGLAND Tony made his debut for England against Spain at the Bernabeu in1987 and played in Euro 88, 96, and 2000 as well as the 1998 World Cup finals. Adams played 59 times at Wembley - a Wembley appearance record (he is also the last England player to score at the old Wembley Stadium, against the Ukraine on 31 May, 2000!) Adams captained England through the Euro 96 campaign when England reached the semi-finals before losing on penalties to Germany. In total he won 66 caps for his country. Tony was awarded the MBE for Services to Football THE SPORTING CHANCE CLINIC In September 2000, as a result of his own experiences with alcoholism, Adams founded the Sporting Chance Clinic. A charity aimed at providing treatment, counselling and education, it also gives confidential help & support for current & former professional sportspeople experiencing difficulties with addictive disorders, alcohol, gambling & substance misuse. SIX Mental Health Solutions Following 20 years with Sporting Chance, Tony decided to replicate the successful template of Education, and mental and emotional therapies and offer them to a wider, non-sporting, audience. He realised that, although currently there is a lot of “noise” around mental health, most businesses struggle to understand, support and treat appropriately their employees suffering from mental health issues. These are not “just” depression and stress, but addiction, grief and anxiety and now, more than ever, isolation. A healthy business can only be as healthy as its workforce. Chuffed to have been invited to the South Trafford Collective meeting today to talk about MileShy. It was great to share the work we’re doing on mental health. Truth is, I wish we could do more. Yes, we have a face to face support group now alongside all the run and walk clubs that have been improving not only physical but mental health too but WHY OH WHY CAN’T WE DO MORE MENTAL HEALTH SUPPORT GROUPS! Of course I didn’t quite word it like that. Imagine a gym where you visited not only for your physical health, but your mental health too? Improve your core strength alongside your mental willpower. Get reinvigorated in the pool and finish off with guided meditation. Hammer out a run on the treadmill, beat the life out of a boxing bag, followed by a relaxing Swedish massage? Grab a coffee, find a seat on the sofa and get a “group therapy blast” for 30 minutes… Physical health, and all forms of improving it, gives numerous different coping strategies to help with poor mental health. So let’s link the two? I can foresee the future going that way, and in many aspects, lots of people who were at that table today are doing elements of that work already – Carly from Trafford Leisure, Andy and Hannah from Blu Sci mental health, Bev from Trafford Council, Dan Shelston (who just knows everyone and everything and is an all-round force for good!) It all comes down to money. I don’t mean to sound depressing, sorry. But even though there are a zillion stats out there at the moment showing how much saving is made per head on the NHS when someone gets more active in older age – the link between that and the funding pots available for preventative care just aren’t aligned. You can’t charge for a mental health support group. But you can charge for a gym membership. Values and behaviours are real; In a world where it is becoming increasingly difficult to interpret the messages we receive across ever multiplying media and information channels I want to introduce you to Jade. I met Jade last week having been invited to observe and be a part of a staff and volunteer day for Access Community Trust by Emma Ratzer MBE. Jade’s story is real & she exemplifies the values and behaviours that I believe are fundamental in empowering people to make sense of and live thier best lives. Jade was supported by Access CT, became a volunteer for them and is now a member of staff working within thier Lived Experience Advisory Forum; a safe, supportive environment in which to share thier experiences of mental health. Jade had the misfortune of being paired with yours truly as my ‘buddy’ for the day and she didn’t waste any time in scootching across the auditorium so say hello, to offer sub-text, and answer my questions quietly as the contents of the day unfolded. Through the day we shared our experiences of mental health and the importance of being able to learn from others in a safe space that allows us to explore and learn for ourselves. I learned that Jade is a key member of Access CT's People, Culture & Wellbeing committee, an internal forum which helps to shape working policy and practice through the organisation. So I want to say a huge thank you to Jade for the space and time that you gave me last week, for the background and insight into your work and the work of your charity. It is the values and behaviours that you live that allow the space for those who have experienced inequality and trauma to make sense for themselves and move forwards. The day will stay with me for a long time. #SafeSharedPeerLearning

Team sports are known to have a positive effect on young people's mental health as are other physical activities. Less discussed are the negative effects that arise from rejection, over competitiveness, style of coaching and the negative reactions of parents watching from the sidelines. Should more be done to support young people's mental health at "grassroots"? Through our work, young people, carers and adults have disclosed how their negative experiences have been a trigger for poor mental health (anxiety / depression / loneliness); led to negative behaviours (including addiction); caused performance issues at school; and has discouraged them from participating in any other physical activities - therefore leading to poor physical health. The Colebridge Trust Ltd (registered charity) would like to work with both grassroots clubs (with the aim of prevention) and the individuals (initially up to age 25) who have had the negative experiences. As football fans gear up for the nail-biting Manchester derby #FACupFinal at Wembley, MEN'S MINDS MATTER COMMUNITY INTEREST COMPANY is leveraging match-day anxiety to encourage men to be more open about their mental health with their new campaign. ⚽️🧠 We tapped into the minds of male football fans, and here's what they had to say: - 55% would feel more comfortable discussing mental health within a football-related context. - 56% would discuss their mental health more if a football player or coach shared their struggles. - 53% would be likely or very likely to attend a football event dedicated to mental health awareness. By harnessing football's unifying power, brands can create impactful campaigns that resonate deeply and, hopefully, lead to lasting change.

Brilliant to see the mental health and wellbeing of our most talented young athletes is being so well supported by Sport England and SportsAid We set youHQ up as 4 former athletes (of varying skill level) and know how important the development of mental fitness is in line with physical fitness and technical skill. Young athletes face an intense level of challenge and competition on a daily basis. They therefore need a specific set of strategies and education to support their ambitions.
