Tip number-three for gaining the right kind of executive visibility: get a client who’s cooperative. It helps even more if the client is also actually collaborative. Years back, I represented David Mintz, CEO of Tofutti, an ice-cream-like desert that he invented. Just one little problem. Tofutti was long past its heyday. Some years earlier it had been a phenomenon. Mintz had appeared on “Good Morning America” touting it. But then competition came along and he overexpanded and some products flopped and sales took a nosedive. Now my assignment was to engineer a comeback for the brand. I was then all of three years into my PR career, hardly seasoned enough to take on such a challenge. Still, I met with Mintz, toured his laboratory, learned about his research process and the upcoming products in his pipeline. And pitched him everywhere. And got almost nowhere. I kept at it, though, sending him strategy memos, ready to try new approaches, asking him for his feedback. At one point, he said, “I no longer read anything you send me.” No client had ever said that to me, nor have any since. Hence, my overwhelming preference for a client who’s cooperative. On the flip side, take Vincent Sardi, Jr., then the former owner of the legendary Broadway restaurant, Sardi’s. He planned to come out of retirement and reclaim the namesake restaurant that his father had founded. So I put together a strategy about how this landmark institution was going to be restored to glory. And landed a nearly full-page profile of him in The New York Times. The key? He worked shoulder to shoulder with me, answering all my questions, even the deeply ignorant and naïve ones, in a spirit of partnership. Tune in for more tomorrow.
