The 12-week #ClimatebaseFellowship wrapped this past week, and it was bittersweet. The learning was impactful and the connections and partnerships made - Diana Haemer, Priyanka Surio MPH, PMP, CHES, Galvis Sanchez, Gauri Sarin, Amal K., Barrett Olafson, David Allyn, Dave Brandt, Namrata Tiwari, Jessica Kind, PhD 🌎 - will be particularly relevant as we all go back to the normal business of changing the world. They say the devil is in the details. Meaning that something may seem simple but in fact the details, if not properly appreciated, may cause problems. Part 5 of this series focuses in the first instance (today) on the Carbon ABCs and on explaining some of the key terms used in the energy transition and climate change discourse and in the second (tomorrow), the difference between carbon offsets and carbon credits. I’ve often found that we assume that we know what these terms mean, or that the meaning is obvious but do we, and are they really? As they say, if you want to be a master then master the basics. What is carbon pricing and how can it contribute to solving the climate crisis? ICE’s Gordon Bennett recently tackled this topic with our Co-Founder Michael Greenstone, the Milton Friedman Distinguished Service Professor in Economics at the University of Chicago, alongside Tommy Ricketts, CEO & Co-Founder of BeZero Carbon, and Dr. Jennifer Jenkins, Chief Science Officer for Rubicon Carbon. Straight out of a Chatham House climate event, we interviewed science communicator Susan Joy Hassol, who for 30 years has been translating climate science into English - collaborating on reports, papers, and articles with luminaries like Michael Mann. 🌡 Staying under 1.5C has been part of the story of how we solve climate change since the Paris Agreement. Experts get that it's a stretch goal, staying under 2 is the hard goal, that every 0.1C counts. 📢 But this May, the volume of all searches for information about 1.5 is 4x what it was after Paris. Which suggests that all that repetition of 1.5 in corporate sustainability campaigns, from international institutions, and in media, has gotten through to a much larger group - but perhaps not the nuance. What happens if new research says we can't "keep 1.5 Alive"? How does that story get told? What advice does she have now for climate and climate tech storytellers?
