TO MY FAVORITE FOUNDER CEOs: What was the criteria list you used when seeking out and hiring your first 1 - 5 employees? After working with dozens of start-ups in the biotech industry, the pattern I have witnessed on such hiring criteria is pretty universal - Founders hire for technical competency (the what) first and mostly minimize as secondary (if not outright ignore) the desired values/behavior set (the how). My experience has shown that the most successful start-ups approach in the completely opposite manner… HIRING CRITERIA: Aligned values first - Technical competency second. Technical competency will only bring you halfway to the building of a sustainable and successful business. When hyper-growth, chaos or crisis creep in and stuff starts falling apart, that technical competency will not pull you through to the other side… accountability to aligned (and authentically defined) values/soft skill behaviors will. I am excited to share more details on how start up leaders can proactively navigate this process through a more formal and objective model that I have been personally piloting “in the wild” 😝 Hear more in the Compt podcast I participated in below 👇 Please check it out if you have the time, I promise it will help put you (and your business!) in a better position for short term strategic de-risking which increases probability of long term success! #ValuesFirst #FoundationalValues #AccountabilityFrameworks #OperationalizeCulture
Next week on Getting Personal with Compt... it's humanity that makes a workplace something special. For technical founders, it can be hard to lean into feelings over numbers. But you'll find that investing in your people is simply good business. That and more in our conversation with Lynn Walder (she/her/hers)! Tune in Thursday 4/4! #GettingPersonal #Compt #PeopleOperations #CompanyCulture
Podcast looks like it's going to be a good one! Looking forward to it Lynn Walder (she/her/hers)
