This comes after Leverkusen beat Bayern Munich 3-0 in the Bundesliga on Saturday evening, a result which saw the side managed by Xavi Alonso move five points clear at the top of the table after a sensational start to the season as they go in search of their elusive first top-flight league title. Both centre-back Tapsoba and right-back Frimpong featured in Leverkusen’s 3-0 victory against the 32-time Bundesliga winners, the former playing all 90 minutes and the latter coming off the bench to score in second-half stoppage time. 23-year-old Dutch full-back Frimpong came through the youth ranks at rivals Manchester City’s academy before joining Celtic in 2019. Two years and 36 appearances later he would go on to join Bundesliga outfit Leverkusen for an undisclosed fee on an initial four-and-a-half-year deal which would later be extended until 2028. Burkina Faso-born Tapsoba began his career at Portuguese side Vitoria Guimaraes where he would spend two years before completing a move to Leverkusen himself. Since joining the German side he has made 116 Bundesliga appearances across five seasons. Why would this be a good signing? Tapsoba and Frimpong boast a combined 205 appearances in the German top flight as well as 10 between them in the Champions League. Whilst still both being young players, 23 and 25, this plethora of experience is just what United need having shipped 33 goals so far this campaign, Spurs the only side to have conceded more in the top-six. United have also suffered somewhat of an injury crisis within the defence this season, with Diogo Dalot and Jonny Evans being the only senior defenders to have not faced a spell on the sidelines for the Red Devils this campaign. Both Tapsoba and Frimpong have been reliable since moving to Germany with the former Celtic man having only missed an average of six games through injury per season and the Dutchman missing just an average of three. How could this impact both United and Leverkusen? The most obvious knock-on effect of these two deals happening would be the need to move at least one, most likely two of United’s current defenders on in order to comply with financial fair play (FFP) restrictions. Someone like Harry Maguire who has been linked with a move away from Old Trafford in the previous few windows could finally leave the club to make room for Tapsoba and perhaps one of Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Dalot or Tyrell Malacia could be deemed surplus to requirements and be used as a makeweight to bring in Frimpong.
