I attended this panel organized by the Center for an Urban Future last week, because I find myself equally fascinated and frustrated by discussions about the future of hybrid work and its impact on cities. This rich conversation covered challenges and solutions from multiple angles, and I'm sharing this recap by the brilliant Larisa Ortiz here because she captured many of the points that resonated with me. Can I double down on this, please: Let's stop focusing on policy-making to encourage a full 'return to the office'. Hybrid is here to stay, and you know what? The flexibility is better for many among us, the options are more equitable, and the recognition that we carry a full load of responsibilities in both our private and professional lives feels so much more... human. We don't have to go back to that old system, but that doesn't mean we have to abandon opportunities to invest in our downtowns and central business districts. Let's embrace this moment to reimagine these as places people want to live, work and play, instead of attempting to recreate the downtowns of the last decade. If that's the path we choose, it will be tough to compete with cities who are embracing a new future.

For large urban healthcare systems, effective master planning requires a holistic approach that accounts for the impact the campus will have on employment, business and real estate development. A key part of this is planning sustainably to ensure the campus will enhance the health of its community.
