Many charity organizations and foundations tirelessly work on commendable projects geared towards social impact and climate change mitigation projects, bringing invaluable benefits to communities worldwide. These groups persist in their efforts to change lives, by relying on donations collected during closed and large-scale events. It's notable however that fundraising revenues from such gatherings dipped last year, even as events largely shifted back to in-person formats. There are fantastic opportunities for philanthropists to make a direct difference outside London if they know where to look. Last week's report "Giving Back Better" written by Shivani H Menon from Onward comprehensively covered lots of issues around #philanthropy and a suite of recommendations to improve giving.   One of the themes we particularly appreciated being raised is the geographical variation in philanthropic giving and how charities based outside London and supporting beneficiaries outside London can struggle to be seen. 🔸 “More than a third of all grants from the largest philanthropic charitable foundations were made into London”🔸   Large, national, well-established causes have the resources and networks to present their work to the philanthropic community, whilst hyper local causes, such as hospices, village halls and community groups are, by definition, relatively easy to find.   However, charities in the middle like The Talent Tap, who are consciously targeting young people in disadvantaged communities and social mobility coldspots outside London are less accessible to prospective philanthropists.    We are fortunate to have a small number of donors whose giving is motivated by our work in communities they would like to support but we would love to meet more.   “I am particularly impressed by the work The Talent Tap does on The Isle of Wight, which is an area of great need, giving young people from disadvantaged backgrounds the confidence and connections to achieve their ambitions.” David Hoare We are really interested in joining the conversation of how we can be more visible within the #philanthropy world. The more opportunities for those of us in this part of the charity sector to showcase our work, the better our chances are of enlisting the vital support our beneficiaries need. We are using the power of media production as a force for good. ✨🎥 I’ve been working in the media sector for nearly 9+ years, and through then, I’ve always tried to do my bit to offer a few free shoots here and there to help charitable causes where high-quality content can help organisations. With our mission at Velvet Green Media we have always wanted to make some real impact through our work, so when Brendan Spaun and I co-founded the company, we had the shared mission to take a share of our profits to give it back in a positive way. We initially did this with climate charity donations. As we worked increasingly with companies making an impact, we realised the same effect we create for a company through our media campaign projects would be perfect for a local charity. (As is often the case, the people/companies doing the most impactful things have terrible comms explaining what they do). With the added fact that what we produce will also be Co-donated by our supportive clients, it’s a bonus they get through working with us. So here it is, our first-ever give-back campaign for a fantastic London-based charity called Unfold! Unfold is a fantastic charity supporting vulnerable children, women with children and refugees through mentoring. Oxfam Aotearoa will be celebrating the final Trailwalker event in New Plymouth, March 2024 - after 17 years and raising more than 16 million to fund Oxfam’s lifesaving work around the world. Since 2006, over 20,000 people in New Zealand have taken part in this incredible endurance team event walking 50km or 100km through stunning Aotearoa terrain and raising vital funds to help eliminate poverty. While huge efforts have been made to adapt our Trailwalker to changing conditions, including a digital event in 2022, a variety of external factors have led us to host our final Oxfam Trailwalker. Jason Myers, Oxfam Aotearoa ED said ‘It is with a heavy heart that I share the news that we will deliver our last Oxfam Trailwalker in 2024. I know that many of you will share in the sadness with us. The difficult reality is that recent years have been incredibly hard for the events sector in Aotearoa. Sadly, Trailwalker has not been spared. Rising operational costs coupled with cost-of-living pressures made fundraising more difficult and meant that the viability of the event had to be questioned. Ultimately, the unpredictability of how much the event can raise is no longer a risk that the organisation can carry.’ For those who have always wanted to try this challenge or for those wanting to walk one last time, we encourage you to sign up, as registrations are now open.
