Excellent article. Sometimes Portco management by PE fund managers can result in a disconnect between the priorities of fund managers and those of the executives running the portfolio company. At the fund level, managers—tasked with cost reduction and efficiency mandates—crunch the numbers and scrutinize every additional expense, including hires, at the portfolio company. Meanwhile, on-the-ground executives running the companies approach the task from an operational perspective. I have worked with Portcos executives who balk at the PE fund managers “do more with less” approach. To a large extent this is brought about due to the shorter investment horizon of the PE investor. Also a (mis)perception among Porto executives about PE investors as buccaneers and interested mainly in asset stripping.
