    On vision and action: companies embrace science-based sustainability goals. ... It is commendable that 69% of the UK's FTSE100 companies have either established a Science Based Target (45%) or have expressed a commitment to do so (24%). This aligns with the 2022 global trend, as reported by edie, which witnessed an 87% increase in companies validating their targets compared to the cumulative total of the previous seven years. However, it is imperative to reference studies conducted earlier this year by esteemed institutions such as CDP, EY, and IPCC. Their studies indicate that a mere 0.4%-5% of companies possess a comprehensive and adequately resourced plan to achieve their net-zero objectives. The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) underscores the pressing need for action, especially in light of the escalating impacts of climate change. On a global scale, by the end of 2022, companies representing 34% of the market capitalization had made commitments to science-based targets. This trend, particularly evident in regions like Japan and Asia—with China at the forefront—demonstrates the growing importance of not just setting goals, but ensuring they are backed by actionable and credible plans. At Agricarbon, we have witnessed food and beverage companies not just making commitments but actively delivering on their strategies, with an increasing focus on soil carbon within their supply chains. By investing in regenerative agricultural practices, these companies are harnessing the potential of soil as a carbon sink.     📢 Key take-aways from "Global Sustainability Competitiveness Index - 2023 Report"👇 ✅ The Global average Sustainable Competitiveness score in 2023 is 43.3 – out of a possible maximum of 100 ✅ The global gap to a perfect sustainable competitive World is 56.7 – we are far from an inclusive and circular society that lives in equilibrium with the natural environment ✅ In the Natural Capital dimension, ore than 50% of all indicators globally are pointing the wrong way. We have to expect further decline of the natural environment in the future ✅ Improvements in resource efficiency can be observed. However, the pace of small positive changes in is insufficient to avoid climate disaster. The necessary technology is available, but is no political vision to direct the markets is visible ✅ The corporate world is driven by competition and cost-benefit considerations – and is therefore ahead of politics (e.g. actual roadmaps to net-zero by 2025-2030) ✅ The large gap between low and high performers in Intellectual Capital dimension raises the question: is education the key to development, or the result of development? ✅Trend analysis shows small but positive developments in Social and intellectual Capital, where slow but steady development could be expected in the right circumstances ✅ Tribalism, unnecessary cultural wars, struggles for perceived power, and armed conflict initiated by small minorities are complicating (if not preventing) the implementation of simple, efficient and readily available solutions.  ✅ There is immense untapped potential. 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐢𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐥𝐝 𝐁𝐚𝐧𝐤 𝐭𝐫𝐲𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐨 𝐚𝐝𝐝𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐢𝐭𝐬 𝐫𝐞𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭?  ⚠️ “Our current “take-make-waste” linear model of economic expansion is unsustainable, not only on #environmental terms (up to two-thirds of global GHG emissions, 90 percent of #biodiversity loss, and 2/3 of air quality-related deaths are directly attributable to material extraction, consumption and waste), but also from an economic security and inclusion dimension.”  ⚠️ “While paying the costs of global environmental degradation, developing countries – particularly those whose economies are heavily concentrated on raw materials exports – also disproportionately suffer from commodity supply shock, and will face increasing #investment and trade-related risks from resource efficiency policies enacted in high income countries.” 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐨𝐛𝐣𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐫𝐞𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭 𝐢𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐢𝐧𝐜𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐞 𝐚𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐨 𝐝𝐫𝐚𝐰 𝐥𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐧 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦, as these concerns have developmental and global public goods implications which fall into the scope of the World Bank’s mission. In order to do so, the report covers topics such as  ✅ Making the case for the circular #transition,  ✅ Progress toward a circular economy within the EU,  ✅ The trade implications of the circularity transition,  ✅ The role of the private sector: Opportunities and barriers,  ✅ The economics of circular economy policies,  ✅ A policy framework for the circularity transition. “Today’s global economy consumes over 100bn tonnes of raw materials every year, while at the same time discarding roughly 90bn tonnes of materials as waste… By 2050, global demand for virgin materials is expected to at least double again…” which is far from #sustainable either from economic or environmental point of view. 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐫𝐞𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭 𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐰𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐚𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐞𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐝𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐮𝐩𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐢𝐬 𝐩𝐨𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡 𝐚 𝐟𝐚𝐫-𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐬𝐮𝐢𝐭𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐩𝐨𝐥𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐬 aimed at four dimensions:  1️⃣ creating the 𝐢𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐬 to ensure an adequate pricing of #naturalresources,  2️⃣ providing 𝐢𝐧𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 allowing economic actors to take better decisions,  3️⃣ enabling 𝐢𝐧𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐭𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 to mainstream circularity as a whole-of-government agenda, and  4️⃣ unlocking 𝐢𝐧𝐯𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬 to support uptake among producers and consumers. -- Follow me on LinkedIn: Zsuzsanna Tajti PhD, certified CFA, FRM, PRM, CIA, SCR 🌱 -- To download the report, click on the document's bottom right corner 👇
