A new artificially Aerated Horizontal Flow Constructed Wetland (AHFCW) system is installed at the municipal Wastewater Treatment Plant in Chania, Greece as part of our project, receiving primary effluent. Artificial aeration is known to increase oxygen availability in the system promoting aerobic processes, improve wastewater mixing within the wetland reactor, and enhance the treatment capabilities under higher hydraulic loading rates. The #ConstructedWetlan operates as one unit; the three tanks are connected in series. This setup also includes biochar as part of the substrate in order to monitor the impact on the performance. Moreover, the design follows a maiandric path along the flow: the first and second tanks are connected at the bottom and the second and third tanks at the top. This design promotes different processes within the system that we wish to monitor. As before, the design in tank-in-series will help us to attempt better modelling the wetland system. This project is funded by the ΕΛΙΔΕΚ - Ελληνικό Ίδρυμα Έρευνας και Καινοτομίας - Hellenic Foundation for Research and Innovation.

📣 SITE UPDATE: STRASBOURG, FRANCE 🔝 We have started the treatment of the 4th pile on our site in Strasbourg, France. ✔️ We are applying Ex-Situ Thermal Desorption (ESTD) to remediate the soil contaminated with Hydrocarbons and Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs). 🌡️ The desired treatment temperature is 250°C. 77 burners are heated to treat 2000m³ of soil. We have introduced a system of continuous monitoring of stack emissions. As soon as we approach the threshold, an alert is triggered, enabling us to take immediate action to resolve the situation. In this way, we are able to guarantee greater compliance with current standards. 🤝 We are working on this project site with Lingenheld Groupe. Mapping the Middle East’s desalination boom The #mena region leads the world in #desalination. In 2019, an authoritative study by a team of academics produced eye-popping statistics: ➡️As of 2018, MENA produced an estimated 48% of the world’s desalinated water. ➡️In the same year, it produced 70% of all brine (desalination’s hyper-saline byproduct). ➡️55% of all brine came from just four states: Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Kuwait, and Qatar. Besides being a beautiful tourist location, the Esch-sur-Sûre Lake powers a hydroelectric power station and acts as the largest drinking water reservoir in Luxembourg providing today 43 % of the annual national demand. These are all compelling reasons to preserve the Sûre water quality and its functionality. The total catchment area of the reservoir is 428 km2, 2/3 of which is in Wallonie (Belgium). As such, pollutants are discharged into the Sûre from both the Belgian and Luxembourg sides showing that an improvement of the Sûre water quality is possible only through coordinated cross-border cooperation. The Interreg Greater Region-funded QualiSûre project has the ambition to address this complexity. The project specifically aims: 1) to identify the emission hot spots 2) to optimize existing WWTP 3) to use Nature-Based Solutions (NBS) supported with unconventional substrates for the reduction of micropollutants, nutrients and bacteriological contamination. The results will be incorporated into a decision-support tool that enables the intelligent distribution of pollution in the catchment area. Finally, a cross-border master plan for maintaining the quality of the Sûre will be developed. The project will benefit from an interdisciplinary team led by the Luxembourg Wastewater Syndicate SIDEN (Diederich Ronny jean-david Maennlein Roland Schaack) and having partners on the Belgian side such as the water institute CEBEDEAU (Jean Francois Gerard Fanny Gritten Stephane NONET), the wastewater operator IDELUX Eau (Quentin Neulens Christine BOUILLON) and the Société Publique de Gestion de l'EauSPGE (Rosalie PYPE); on the German side the RPTU Kaiserslautern-Landau (Ulrich Dittmer @Henning Knerr); and from Luxembourg the company RTC4Water (Alex Cornelissen @Georges Schutz), LIST (Tom Gallé) and University of Luxembourg (Joachim Hansen Silvia Venditti). Last month, the construction of the new water line of the Chadrac WWTP started on behalf of the Communauté d'agglomération Le Puy-en-Velay. This new wastewater treatment system integrates our Nereda® aerobic granular sludge process in their 75,000 PE capacity plant, providing them with a high-performance, reliable, and very compact water treatment process. This exciting project is set to be fully completed by 2025. Our partner, Sources has mastered the implementation of Nereda® technology in France over the last 10 years, with this new project joining a group of over 100 wastewater treatment plants worldwide, 6 of which are currently operational in France, with more being designed and constructed in the country.
