TL;DR: Well written lines of relevant product thoughts are the measure of a product manager's output just like well-written lines of code are for an engineer. Long version: Q. As a Product manager, (PM) what is one (of a few other ways) way you know you did justice to your role? A. It's simple. Measure and compare words spoken Vs written by you in your day. Drawing useful visuals is an acceptable option to words written. Why? Words spoken >> are often ignored, not grasped, not recorded and ephemeral. They rely heavily on the audience to have noted, interpreted and acted upon. They are also not the most organized form of communicating. Words written (or a drawing) >> are near-permanent if chosen to be recorded on a searchable, publicly available medium like your internal Confluence, Sharepoint or a Slack broadcast that gets pinned. They can be iterated upon, reviewed often, referenced in the future and analyzed in greater depth faster than listening to a recorded meeting repeatedly. PMs can create a lasting, noticeable and wider impact by writing things down, even if its just in a meeting chat. Even if no one else read them, the writer themselves reaps the benefit of more thoughtful, organized and durable structuring of their ideas. Humble confession: Being vocally self-critical, I just went by for 1.5 "busy (meetings)" days without writing anything meaningful besides meeting notes and action items, and felt the need to share this. Rant: At every place I have worked, I have seen at least a few Product Managers never putting pen to paper and thinking their job is done when they show up to a meeting, provide lackluster opinions or worse yet, simply nod in shallow agreement or recap the standard procedural statements like "this needs additional prioritization discussion". #writemore #beabetterpm #whatdoesaproductmgrdoanyway #nongenaipost

Why PayPal is outcompeting Adyen in North America... Despite Adyen's 16% market share and being the 5th biggest in Europe, it has been a struggle for Adyen to grow in North America, which doesn't come as a surprise to many in the industry. For many European companies, the dream is to do well in the United States, as it solidifies that you are one of the best in the world at what you do. But with several European startups failing to penetrate the US market, such as N26 who decided to retreat from the US market, and Revolut's inability to secure a Banking License. Some might wonder why Adyen isn't gaining more market share in the US, despite having a much better proposition than most of its competitors. The short answer... PayPal. With PayPal acquiring Braintree (cards processing), Venmo (digital wallet), Zettle by PayPal (SoftPOS), and Honey (loyalty) it has created a unique proposition that helps them with being able to undercut and out-negotiate Adyen in any RFP they are in, especially if you consider that merchants with significant volume and brand recognization in fashion, retail, and digital goods, already rely heavily on PayPals products. However, PayPal is able to spread its profitability across PayPal, Braintree, and Venmo, where they can price higher on the former, and lower on the latter. This is what allows them to get an edge on Adyen who don't even counter as they would be given up too much margin to compete. Another reason is the increase in interest rates over the last 18 months, from 0% to 5.5%. A majority of enterprise businesses that have debt on their books have aggressively been looking at saving costs. Having done several of these myself, the reason to do Cost Optimization for the majority of them is that, in times of growth, they don't care about paying 50 or 60bps more, as long as it works. But as interest rates have risen, CFOs across the US, understand that growth will inevitably slow down, and the time to start looking for savings is the next step in the playbook, to ensure the financial health of the company. But probably the most impactful reason Adyen struggles against PayPal is the difference between ownership of customers. Adyen doesn't have ANY direct connection with consumers. Most Americans can't even pronounce the name, let alone tell you what the company does. Whereas PayPal, has grown on both the merchant and the consumer side, with over 430 Million users, they actually own a consumer base that they can leverage by directly marketing to, extracting data from, and building products for.
