Do you feel the weight, the impact, the heaviness when someone like Louis Gossett Jr. takes their final bow? What about when Maya Angelou joined the ancestral realm or when we learned that former president Jimmy Carter was entering hospice, which signified he was coming to the end of his life? What is that deep ailing we have for people we may have never met but viewed and admired from afar? It's called influence, and it's the nucleus of leadership.
In its simplest definition, influence is equated to human impact or effect. From a leadership standpoint, it is a critical component to make the art of leadership work. When these great men and women, these great humans whom we love from afar, consider our cultural aunties and uncles who live their lives meaningfully, the world must take notice of how it impacts us to our core. Sometimes, unbeknownst to them, it shapes us at our core. This is why leadership is so important; you possess the power to affect others' lives for the good and bad unknowingly.
Here's to all of the positive leaders- those who dare guide us to what we hope is a better future. While another has taken his final bow, I encourage and challenge each of you to elevate your own leadership aptitude and skills.
