Day 1 of #LondonClimateActionWeek has come to an end. It was a great day, starting with an event on mobilizing #privateequity and #venturecapital into emerging markets to fuel the #justenergytransition hosted by City of London Corporation and Impact Investing Institute and ending with a reception for the Catalytic Climate Finance Facility hosted by Climate Policy Initiative, Convergence Blended Finance, and Dentons. Key takeaways from the day? ·       Climate change is eroding African GDP by 15% ·       Like with any investment, when looking at climate finance pipeline, investors look to see the value to potential customers in terms of increased revenue or decreased costs (aka increased savings) ·       #blendedfinance is key to many opportunities, but commercial investors don’t want to see how the sausage is made…they want to know that an investment is de-risked. Full stop. ·       Investing in people and communities can be save time and costs, not add to both. ·       We need to engage more local asset allocators. ·       We need to think about impact from the perspective of depth and duration as well as scale and urgency Great to see old friends and meet new ones. A final thing from me for the year as we enter the snoozy Australian summer period. I provided some quick comments to Environmental Finance about the significant signatory interest PRI is receiving on sovereign engagement, especially on climate change. It means we are thinking more seriously about what an expanded program might look like as we head into 2024. This interest is being further spurred on by the publication of 25 preliminary sovereign assessments under the ASCOR framework developed by Transition Pathway Initiative (TPI) and Grantham Research Institute on Climate Change & the Environment, with support from investors, PRI and other investor networks. The Australian pilot is still in early days. But a model is emerging that may help investors and sovereigns establish mutually beneficial and sustained dialogue on climate change across different types of markets. This morning we are kicking off the Nature Market Dialogue, the space for building unity and consensus to realise the potential of high integrity nature markets. The Dialogue will have three workstreams: Governance, Policy Continuity and Demand Drivers. This morning we are starting with the Governance Dialogue, with support from Frontier Economics, Arup and Environment Market Boards. We have Ministers, officials and leaders from the worlds of farming, finance and business, and we want to hear from YOU. All three workstreams will be long running processes, and we want all voices to be heard.
