AI everywhere. From the WEF 2024 at Davos to The Economist, talk abound about how AI can boost transform life, business and labour markets, human capital and ultimately corporate growth. A quick reflection on my recent flurry of exciting AI-powered, People-centred events. In November, our EY CHRO Summit: An integrated perspective of HR, powered by AI. In December, cascading into the EY-Microsoft, EY-Service Now and EY-SAP Success Factors Roundtables. Genesis throwback to the initial conceptualisation - one main event branching out into three, a series meant to engage People Leaders in absorbing, aspirational and inspirational discussions into what the Future of AI holds for HR and People leaders in business and government. 2024 has been about AI powered HR / AI powered customer service solutions. I tell clients that training we need to deliver differs from the norm of technology projects - we usually only train the users, but now the bots as well. Popular question: Can the bot "train itself" so as to eliminate human interventions (After all, 17m people globally work in call centers, any savings translates directly into $ savings). But AI as we know it today is restrictive in its nature drawing from a knowledge pool defined by what we tell it to - it’s only as good as its data. The solutions are carefully positioned as an augmentative technology, a “co-pilot” that deflects the transactional natured tasks keeping human agents for complex requests (AI optimisation applied to analysis, synthesis and recommendations). But not to replace the human in its entirety. Sophie Elmhirst in her Economist article articulates elegantly the hybrid collaboration of digital and human as symbiotic trust to create positive relationships, a beautiful summation of the collaboration between AI and PI (People Intelligence) from my previous posts. The holy grail - for the customer to be unable to tell whether their interaction was with a human or bot. For now, we live in a world where bots are becoming emotionally literate, but not yet emphatically proficient and adept. After all, the ability to "connect with humans" versus "connect to humans" are still worlds apart. AI is the future and here to stay. As Barak Eilam, CEO of NICE puts it, "with the AI wave, either you are part of the steamroller or the road". We can't fight the onslaught, but we can understand, embrace, and navigate it.
