Yesterday, Alliance #CEO and Co-Chair of the #SMI Hospitality and Tourism #TaskForce, Glenn Mandziuk, came together with fellow industry, financial and government leaders at The Sustainable Markets Initiative CEO #Summit, to advance cross-sector #collaboration. The work of #theSMI centres around the #TerraCarta, a framework launched by His Majesty King Charles III, in his former role as The Prince of Wales. With its 10 Articles of Action, the Terra Carta is a roadmap towards an ambitious and #sustainable future for the sake of present and future generations. Throughout this pivotal event, at #ClimateWeekNYC, the SMI team highlighted action being taken on the road to #COP28 and demonstrated how the #privatesector is leading the charge and delivering on its mandate. The event saw speakers and attendees set a collective vision for #COP28 and 2024, as well as sharing insight on how they are accelerating a just transition to a more #sustainable future by putting #Nature, #People and #Planet at the heart of global value creation. Yesterday I attended GEI16, hosted by A Greener Future. Here are my 5 takeaways: 1. I'm always surprised by how much there is going on in the world of sustainability and live events, it’s inspiring! Particularly the empowering talk from Louis VI. Brian Eno and Jarvis Cocker were alright too 😉 2. But... It's clear that being more sustainable isn't without its challenges. In the talk from Julie's Bicycle and Attitude is Everything, Blaine Harrison highlighted how sustainable travel options (like shared shuttle buses, public transport) aren't always accessible for everyone. This is a crucial reminder that our efforts must also ensure no one is left behind 🌍♿ 3. The reality of climate change has moved from an 'if' to a 'how bad' scenario. Especially for outdoor events, the discussion around evacuation plans during extreme weather conditions is becoming necessary 🌧️ 4. What's more, organisations in the event industry are struggling. The risk of high-emission industries exploiting financially vulnerable events for their own "reputation-washing" is a growing concern (thanks InfluencerMap for the new term) 🔍 5. Events can provide a space for sustainable communities to thrive and for people to re-engage with doing good. As Steve Muggeridge from The Green Gathering said: "You create a sustainable community in the field, to oppose the unsustainable society outside." Amazing journey so far - today is Day 5 of our Homeward Bound Projects on the #IslandSky2023 towards Antarctica! We've been in the Falkland Islands for several days by now and it's been breathtaking! Sooo many penguins! Awesome pictures to come soon ;) As part of our program we've started to tackle strategic thinking and developing our strategy map with Kit Jackson (for nothing else but everything in our lives: self, with others, work). At first, it seemed a rather big task to undertake on a wavy and sway-y ship and feeling a bit queasy. But after talking it through with others, it suddenly became more clear. Writing out your strategy map is nothing else but owning the blue print for the very own ship that each of us is steering through life's waves and oceans to wherever we choose to go! Our destination may determine whether we prefer to build a zodiac/dinghy, a racing yacht or rather a slower cruise ship. As long as our ships are well build for the journey across the seas, we will always have the capacity to get there! It is our core values that hold our ships together and make them strong, durable, and ready to withstand stormy times and disruption. Such ships can go anywhere, and when they do with intent and purpose, real impact becomes possible. Now imagine hundreds of women from across the globe going together for a common cause -- for a healthier and more sustainable planet. We'll be a force of nature! 🌏 Where is your ship going?
