Présentation from VivaTech today : How France & Europe Can Lead AI developments? At VivaTech conference in Paris, today, Bruno Le Maire, French Economy Minister, highlighted a bold vision for France to overtake the US in AI development. To achieve this ambitious goal, France needs to focus on several key areas. Firstly, investing in talent is crucial. Enhancing AI education and fostering partnerships between academia and industry will help build a strong pipeline of skilled professionals. This approach ensures that France can cultivate and retain top talent in the field of artificial intelligence. Increasing funding for AI research and development is another essential step. By boosting R&D investments and creating specialized innovation hubs, France can accelerate technological advancements and foster a vibrant ecosystem of AI startups and researchers. Collaboration across Europe is also vital. Leveraging European partnerships allows for the sharing of resources, data, and expertise, which can amplify France’s AI efforts and position the region as a global leader in AI. Supportive regulations play a significant role in this vision. Developing balanced frameworks that encourage innovation while ensuring ethical AI use will help build trust and foster growth in the AI sector. Just for reflection… in the AI race Europe is far ahead on regulation and far behind investments and technology. The gap is huge and the contradiction is evident. Something to bear in mind for public and private institutions, both at EU and country level.

AI Leadership Race: Devastating Numbers for Europe The gap between the U.S. and Europe in AI innovation is staggering and growing rapidly. According to the Stanford University AI Index, the U.S. is pulling far ahead in the AI race, creating a significant divide that Europe must urgently address. In 2023, U.S.-based institutions spearheaded the development of 61 notable AI models, compared to the European Union’s 21 and China’s 15. This massive disparity underscores the U.S.’s formidable lead in AI research and development. Germany stands out within Europe, contributing 5 of the 21 models from the EU. However, this is still a far cry from the U.S.’s 61 models, highlighting the need for a continent-wide push in AI. On the patent front: In 2022, China led global AI patent origins with a staggering 61.1%, vastly outpacing the U.S.’s 20.9%. This marks a significant shift since 2010, when the U.S. held 54.1% of AI patents. Investments: In 2023, the United States saw AI investments reach $67.2 billion, nearly 8.7 times more than China, the next highest investor. While private AI investment in China and the European Union, including the United Kingdom, declined by 44.2% and 14.1%, respectively, since 2022, the United States experienced a notable increase of 22.1% in the same time frame. To catch up to the U.S., the EU needs to take decisive and strategic steps: 1. Increased Investment: Amplify funding for AI research and development. 2. Enhanced Collaboration: Foster stronger partnerships between academia, industry, and government. 3. Talent Attraction: Implement policies to attract and retain top AI talent. 4. Regulatory Support: Create a supportive regulatory framework that encourages innovation while ensuring ethical standards. The race for AI supremacy is intensifying. It’s crucial for the EU to strategically invest and innovate to bridge this significant gap. #AI #AIPatents

AI is not just a technology topic. If you have been following any news (as well as my LinkedIn posts 😉) over the last few months, you know that Artificial Intelligence is here to stay. It is shaping industries and lives worldwide. 🌍 To ensure Europe’s position at the forefront of this #revolution, collaboration between the different players is crucial. Governments, industry and academia need to come together to create innovation that aligns with our shared values. 🤝 Yesterday, the DLD Conference AI Summit brought together 40 expert speakers and more than 400 international attendees and media representatives to dive deeper into the questions and debates around the transformative power of Artificial Intelligence. This collaboration on AI needs to happen across disciplines and with diverse minds to generate the most value and a good future for all. 🙏 I had the chance to have Prof. Dr. Helmut Schoenenberger and Ana Paula De Jesus Assis on stage with me to discuss how we can best ensure that we are stopping the brain drain in Germany, and that AI is being done “the European way”. By joining forces, we can drive innovation, foster research and ultimately create a vibrant ecosystem that propels Europe ahead in the AI race! 🚀 Where do you see AI generate the most value? 👀 #DLDAISummit Steffi Czerny, Stefan Wagner, Michelle-Anna Jetter (She/Her), Alessia Sinzger, Heiko Schlott
